M3 CS

I'm contemplating jumping from my Z4MC to a M3 CS. Has anyone driven one? Would the drive be as enjoyable as the Z4M? Of course CSL would be the weapon of choice but don't want to stretch to the extra. Rear seats and SMG seems the obvious attraction or am I mad for considering the change?

Cheers

Hi mate,

Save for a E92 if you need rear seats. The E46 CS will be a lot less special than your current steed.

The CS is on par performance wise. Nowt in it from 30-150!! Tried and tested.

Yeah but how many E46 M3's do we have in our fine city? Too many imo, saying that the M is going the same way unfortunately.

I don't see the point (in terms of its price premium) of the CS. You might as well get a standard SMG M3 and save loads of money. Or spend the extra and get a CSL (which I think is very over-priced at the moment).

What was the CS? CSL steering wheel, faster rack and what else? Wheels?

A friend of mine recently sold his CSL and got a standard M3 to save money.

The CS gained the CSL rack, brakes and tweaked suspension settings, which makes it just that little bit more involving than the M3, but obviously not as much as the CSL. On the other hand, the CS came with a proper manual box.

Spokey is right though, the CS wheels are different to the CSL in that their construction is not as exotic (at least that's what the journos reported at the time).

The CS wheels differ only in that the fronts are slightly narrower than the CSL's. The rears are the exact same wheels and all the wheels are made of the same materials.

I went the other way from M3 to Z4MC and I can tell you that after 2 years I got bored of the M3 whilst I'm still loving the Z4 after the same time. Also I think the Z4MC has a bit more performance than the M3, CS or not. Not much in it but the power delivery feels more urgent in the Z. Unless you really need the extra seats/ space then I would say don't do it. You'll also pay too much of a premium for a CS over a standard M3 to make it worth while.

Ah OK, thanks for clearing that up. Just proves you cannot believe all of what the journos say (as if we didn't know that already).

As I understand it, the performance of the Zed is closer to the CSL (on a two mile runway anyway), so it makes sense that the M3 will be slightly slower. In reality and on real roads however, I doubt the difference would be too noticeable unless comparing both cars back to back under test conditions.

Well, I wouldn't say it's not worth more than a standard M3, but I don't think there's as much in it as there is between an M3 and a CSL. But as nice as an M3 is, I reckon I'd probably stick with the Z4MC if I had that.

So to summarise the CS aint worth more than the standard M3.
Probably right.
I just get bored of cars far too quickly :(

You're not alone mate

What else is on the shopping list? RS4 perchance?

Incidentally, I'm liking the wee Lotus. What's the spec on it?

I'd be the same if I had a Z4MC - as good as the M3 is, just too common in comparison. Only reason for me would be if I needed 4 seats...

I'd only swap mine for a CSL, but the £7k or so premium they're asking for a car of the same mileage rules it out anyway.

I do like the way the CSL eats up the road though - MUCH more comfortable, better handling and more aurally satisfying than the Z4MC.

I'd agree with the sound, but more comfortable than the Z4MC? Those bucket seats are great, but I'd rather not drive more than an hour anywhere in them.

But they're some of the most comfortable bucket seats I've ever tried, although I do admit I only had 30 minutes as a driver and 4 hours as a passenger, and I'm slightly large (i.e. I provide my own padding) :P
.
The rear seats were only okay for short trips though, and there's nowhere for the driver/passenger to rest their arms as the armrests are removed for the carbon-fibre door-cards.

Fair enough. I've only driven one for 20mins and most of my passenger time has been on track / nordschliefe. Plus it was on rock hard K&W suspension.
