M25 near Heathrow

Question for any chaps in the London area.

I am of late, been having to do regular trips down to Guildford from Watford and as you approach the Heathrow area of the M25, nearly every gantry post both clockwise and anti-clockwise has speed camera warning signs on them.

Does anyone know, which (if any) of them actually have cameras on? I heard ones with cameras usually have an aerial on the end of the gantry but it isnt that obvious when you pass them?

Just a royal pain having to go through there at 70mph when there is next to no traffic about and you want to make progress :driving: and it goes on for bloody miles!!

From my observations, it seems that unless the gantries are showing a temporary speed restriction (usually during rush-hour) then the cameras do feck all..

I've gone through that entire stretch at normal motorway cruising speeds (;)) more times than I can count. I living in Leatherhead (Jct9) and have worked in Hemel (Jct20), and now Slough (Jct16) and so come through that section a lot. Even when the speed restrictions are running, I've safely gone through at 10/15mph over and never heard a thing.

I got tired of wondering the same thing, so got myself an Origin B2 to warn me. Doing a similar route last weekend, I found there is a section on that route which has 4 or 5 gantrys in a row with cameras, and a few more dispersed.

The only reliable way I've found to know whether there's a camera on the gantry or not is to look when you've passed it ... not much help, I know. But if you do take a look you'll spot them.

In this picture, you can spot 4 of them (small black boxes) on the gantry. Only one lane is monitored at any one time (if any). They are apparently only reliably calibrated up to 130mph.

I've also read that the glass on the camera is bullet proof, but not paintball proof.

Cheers David, thinking of getting one as I had the Safespeed detector on my tracker for my M3 and it is dead handy to have.

Is this the version you have? http://www.pogo-gps.co.uk/origin_b2.php

Is it worth getting one off ebay?

That's the one I have, alright. The newer Pogo they do looks a bit, well, square. The Origin is nice and neat and flat and fits in well on the dash.

I got mine off eBay too... be aware that there is a £30 (I think) owner transfer charge when you buy a second hand one. In my case, the seller said in his listing he'd pay for that but you need to watch out since the seller may not be aware of it when he is selling. You also need to make sure you get the one with the USB rather than the serial connection (most are USB). I see there's a few there for £125 brand new, boxed and with 6 months subscription - that looks like good value to me.

I didn't install it myself, paid a guy up the road £50 who did a great job. I have the laser module, but didn't bother with it. I just wanted the neatest solution to warn me of fixed location cameras.

I'd highly recommend getting one.

PS. The B2 is difficult to get working under Windows Vista; I finally figured it out last night so if you do get one and need help there, drop me a PM.

Cheers David, that is very helpful.

I have seen the ones you mention on ebay, I will look into it.

I use the m25 a lot and the only time I observe the speed limit is when the signs are lit. I've never had a ticket so the rumour that the camera's are only on when a lower limit is set seems to be true.

I have also heard a rumour that the switch the signs on for the slightest of reasons to raise some revenue...

There used to be many more scameras before the widening scheme took place but usually I carry around 10mph (speedo reading) through the gantries when the matrix are lit and more when they're not. There are only four genuine scameras between junction 10 and Heathrow and probably only one of them is active.

Don't take the piss and you should be alright.

Does anyone know if there is ever a speed check on the M6 Toll? Was driving there this weekend, and as soon as the barriers go up it seems to be a speed track ...

Maybe as you have paid in advance, they don't need to collect more money for revenue by doing speed checks on the road itself.

Just wondered if anyone had every heard of anything on that road
