M25 (M40-M4) new HADECS-3 speed cameras in variable speed limit

Anyone else noticed two new speed cameras have recently appeared in the 'managed' section of the western section of the M25?

It's really hard to find out much about these but basically you've got three cameras close together on a pole about 100m before a gantry and then a sort of gallows bracket to the left of the gantry with two lasers, pointing in opposite directions.

I believe something similar has been stinging the unsuspecting in the Kent section of the M25 since last year.

They are located:
Anti-clockwise before you go down the hill then back up again to the M40 junction.
Clockwise 1.5miles after the M4 junction (this one doesn't appear to have been wired in yet - 15/6/2016)

My understanding is that the detection speed of these is matched to the motorway speed (which automatically gets reduced to 50mph according to volume of traffic but can manually be set at lower speeds).

This seems pretty stealth to me - no publicity, no new signage, no yellow paint, a completely new design.

Bigger brother can't help but meddle and we are potentially collateral damage. Or is it simply about revenue generation?

At least the three on the pole 100 meters before the "real" ones are a perfect warning sign. Every time I see that, I hit the anchors.

Any idea what the three before the actual hadecs are for?

Yes - always on but these work at different speeds according to the (variable) limit in place at the time. This will obviously realize huge safety benefits (compared to the old GATSO's that only seem to flash at 80ish) as opposed to utter chaos because 90% of people will be completely oblivious until they look up and realise the car in front has braked.

Perhaps if enough people complain about the delays whilst the Highways Agency close the motorway to clean up the accidents and the papers whip up a campaign they'll turn them off again....

The three on the pole are actual cameras (one for each lane) that show the back of your car passing under the gantry with the speed limit displayed above. It's going to be pretty difficult to argue against that sort of evidence!

ok, but they have no measuring function then and are the perfect visible deterrent. The hadecs themselves are hard to see until it is too late - the three on the pole are a good timely giveaway. Just let the accelerator go and you slow down enough in time to not have to brake.

At least they get the bikes that way as well I suppose which makes it a bit more of a level playing field.

have seen these triggered when no gantry speed shown , that's what I was meaning by always on , unlike the ones that are above each lane on the actual gantry

Good to remember these are all on the "smart" m,ways that we had to endure years of inconvenience whilst they put in the infrastructure so we could have better traffic flow  yeah right

Just means a glow or red lights for each gantry of everyone slowing down (except for the foreigners but then again I did the same to them on the other side of the tunnel  )

A timely mention for me heading to Dover via M25 tomorrow night
Last time I went to Dover at about 5.30am on a Sunday morning I actually observed some of the 50mph restriction that was in place all of the way from North Mimms to the Dartford crossing despite there not being anyone else around. Unfortunately this meant I was unwittingly considerably later than planned for the Dartford crossing. It's free before 6.00 but if you go thru at 6.01 without paying they fine you....

Guess who forgot to pay last time he used the tunnel

I blame them though as I can't set up an account. Remembered 10 days later and paid then. Heard nothing yet, but it's taken them 3 months before when my Romainian friend used my plates :x

These cameras are now on the M42 between Shirley and the Belfry exit. One near Shirley, one between the airport and the M6 and one more on the curved section as you meet the roundabout for the Belfry. In addition to all of the gantry cameras.

You need to lease a car from Luxemburg for a year each time. Fully legal to drive here for a year and never any fines 8)

There is one of these on the M20 now just before J5 southbound. I disagree with PVR - the small cameras are not easy to spot if you're driving normally in a long of cases because of trees etc, and the fact that if you're in the outside lane then you're not looking toward the inside. I just assume all cameras are set to 70 and on all the time now, including the old gantry gatsos.

I have European speed trap eyes so cameras on a post are a lot easier to find than an upside down bin next to the road which they use in mainland Europe.

Not found one hidden by trees yet :poke:

Fair do's to the French with their upturned bins /daleks , they do at least offer a decent warning sign 200/400 yards prior
