///M top speed

Evening all, just had a chat earlier with some friends and discussing Top Speed, as far as I'm aware our cars are limited to 155, I've heard it said there's a soft limiter and 165 is achievable, but I've also read that unlimited 175 ish is the top speed, probably been discussed before but I'd welcome your thoughts, ps I've not got the cahooonies to find out myself

I think I remember reading that the speed limiter was restricted to 6th gear, and that people on the autobahns nudged 165 in 5th. The 175 might sound right with a complete derestriction though.

I had mine over 160 on the autobahn in 6th on our euro trip a couple of years ago. PVR reckons the car isn't limited for some reason as he's done the same in it :?

I bottled it and slowed down

Has been mentioned many times before.

In 5th, the speedo will show about 175mph, and gps shows about 167mph.

In 6th, the speedo shows about 165mph, and gps about 156mph.

All done on the autobahn between Nurburg & Trier.

BTW, my Alfa does 130mph (supposed to max at 120mph), but takes a hell of a lot longer to slow down when a truck pulls out in front of it :x

Spot on thanks :driving:

According to BMW the Z4M "Drivers Pack" (only for Coupe) takes the top speed to 275kph, which is 171mph:

This can also be done to the roadster, my Indi offered it to me. £500 notes though...

So a couple of mph faster by removing the limiter in 6th - possibly saves a few MPG too as you'd be at about 1500rpm less.

There'll also be a small amount of variance due to tyre brand and sizing (mine are 265/40r18 rear), but even on standard sizes you can get a couple of % difference in rolling radius (which could equate to 1-3mph variance).

The ///M is geared to do 171 in 5th before the Rev limiter cuts in, as far as I am aware the speed limiter only governs 6th gear. So they will all do 171 in 5th. Personally I have seen 167 in 6th so the limiter is pretty soft either way. :D

Is that soft limiter also applied to non m? Say 3.0 coupe? I'm taking mine to Terminal velocity event in July.. on a 2mi runway so I'd like to max out and I wonder what gear is best to attempt it at.. I'm not expecting m top speed but 155 would be nice.

Had my 3.0si past 145 in 5th & still climbing-6th is very tall almost like an overdrive. Id say leave it in 5th and let it sing :)

My local BMW dealer also offered this option for my M Roadster. I don't recall the exact cost but as I recall it was around $1,000. I have on one occasion exceeded 155 MPH in 5th gear reaching about 160 or a little more. I was still accelerating but was running out of road so I had to slow down.

i've had mine flat out in 6th at 250km/h.... there was more revs to go but felt like that was the electronic limiter holding it there...

I've had mine on just under 280 km/h (175 mph) on the speedo but then I ran out of road.
That was 100% stock wheels/tyres/software & no aero/wings etc.
There wasn't a visible decline either.
