M steering wheel in a 3.0i

I think the standard steering wheel in my 3.0i is to thin and would like to mount a M wheel instead.

Can this be done? (are they interchangeable)
I do not have multifunction on my wheel today. Is there a M wheel without multifunction? If not, are all cars pre-wired for a multifunction wheel or will I end up with a load of buttons with no function?

Oh, if anybody has a price indication or one for sale - let me know!

I have the M multi function wheel in my 3.0si. the only button that doesn't work is the voice dial button...

I remeber reading on here somewhere that you need to program something - anyone?

No programming needed.

Programming *may* be needed - I'm in the middle of this on an '06 car - it should be a straight swap from a normal one but either:

1. I don't have the wiring that should be their on this age of car - I think unlikely but am going to try and check this weekend OR
2. I need re-programming to add that module to the car. I don't think people who've done this mod have done it on a facelift car on the forum (please correct me if I'm wrong) so maybe reprogramming is needed on facelift cars. I've found a specialist near me who are getting the latest programming machine next week, so will know within the next 2 - 3 weeks.

Changing the physical wheel however is VERY VERY easy!

I paid £220 (including VAT) from BMW for it and sold my old one for £70 + P&P to another forum member. Also - looking at that parts site that was also posted, the price in Euro's for the wheel is much higher, I think £100+ more after converting it. So if I'm correct (slight leap of faith there) if you're in Europe, it would be cheaper to buy in the UK and have it shipped over by someone you know, or someone on the forum.

How different does it look? Is it smaller and "chunkier"? I'd like the multi function buttons :D

I think it's pretty much perfect, although some people find it a little too thick (the magazines especially always comment that the BMW M Steering wheels are too thick!) - but I find it just right - as you say, smaller and chunkier with a very slghtly padded feel (sounds odd, but it does work!).

I had a courtesy Z4 with a the standard wheel a couple of months ago - really didn't like using the thinner wheel in it.

The two wheels are actualy the same size, one is just considerably chunkier and slightly padded.

The change over was simple enough, no reprogramming or extra wiring, I already had the controls on the wheel, it's just a straight swap.

The chunky wheel does take some getting used to, some days I love it, others I'd prefer the original. I definetly prefer the softer feeling of the M wheel, I just think it would be better if it's thickness was halfway between the two styles.

How much was your wheel Herminator? I was quoted £ 348 from BMW in Sweden (the one without multifunctions).
