M Coupe P1633 Error Code

Evening all,

Scanned the car today and am getting the following error code:

P1633 - Throttle valve adaption, limp; home position unknown.

It would be great if anyone could shed some light on this and what I need to replace to address it?

The car is driving fine but does have a fairly noticeable bit of hesitation when I plant my foot between 1st and 2nd gear.

What do we think guys?

First thing to try is probably the throttle reset

To reset the throttle responsiveness back to factory defaults.

Turn ignition off
Turn key to "on" position
Wait 15 seconds
Turn ignition off
Wait another 15 seconds

Start the car.... you should find the responsiveness has been reset.

Might sort it out, if not you might need a new throttle sensor but others would know better than me.

Thanks for the reply mate, I will certainly give that a go. Failing that, I thought it may be the TPS.

Anyone else got a thought on this?

My first thought would be one of the TPS or perhaps an issue with the throttle actuator. I'm just guessing though. A throttle reset is a good start but may not change anything if the sensor is failing.

With the mention of the home position I wonder if there's a microswitch (like you'd get on an older cars throttle body/cable pivot) on one of the ITB's or actuator that's a bit sticky? I'd guess not as I imagine it will be controlled and 'known' by the TPS but you never know!

I'm not sure how you'd go about testing the TPS or throttle pedal but I'd be inclined to give everything a good clean up and possibly buy one of the engine TPS to swap over with the others if the cleaning doesn't work.

Actually, have you reset the code and seen it come back? If it's an old code it may not be related to the hesitation. I had a hesitation/bogging and surging issue recently and it turned out to be the MAF.

Thanks for the reply Beanie. TPS was the line of thinking I was on, I reckon it could well be an issue with one of them. A good clean of things is probably not a bad starting point either.

What sort of hesitation were you getting with your MAF issue?

It became very jumpy when cold and whenever i put my foot down below 4krpm it would do nothing, then suddenly 'find itself' and surge forward, sometimes dropping out whilst accelerating and then coming back in again. I didn't have any fault codes but a few people on M3cutters suggested the MAF was the issue and as i had a used one already i swapped it and things instantly went back to normal. It was also suggested that one of the TPS could cause these symptoms but as yet i've had no need to swap them to see if that's the case.

Hopefully it will be a simple/cheap fix for you-have you searched online to see what that code has related to on other z4m's or M3's?

I have done a pretty long search and found very few helpful results, I think the lack of replies on here is a good indication of the lack of knowledge around it.

I am tempted to buy a TPS and MAF and replace them both. What you're describing is exactly what my car does. I think I will go for MAF as the first port of call and then TPS. I'm sure a new MAF will cost me a few ££££.

What was the outcome on this?
I'm having a similar problem (rough idle on startup, engine 'pulsing' and no response from throttle pedal input.

Did you do MAF and TPS replacement?

My car did the same again yesterday, had to try restarting the engine a fair few times for it to clear, its happened a few times now, really annoying. Take it to a specialist that's got a dedicated code reader they can pinpoint the problem more thoroughly.

Ok thx for replying- i thought it was a longshot reviving an old thread, but what a coincidence ur having the same problem again!
Keep us posted re developments/fix etc please.
I'll be cancelling out a few things I think it might be with my motor- new (2nd hand) throttle body and crank/cam position sensors on the way. Have cleaned TB and ICV but no change.
Could also be bad throttle posn sensor but that comes after trying replacement parts.
Sounds like we could have same problem so lets keep each other updated...

Chris, this is a completely different engine so I wouldn't read too much into the findings. You'd be better off looking at the M54 engine threads.

Bearing in mind this is a thread on the S54 M engine so might (probably) be different issues to what you have with the M54...

Having said that, INPA or DIS may help here rather than a generic code reader if you haven't already. That way you can see what values the various sensors are throwing out which might help pin point the problem.
TB issues are something I've not heard of on the S54, there's not really a whole lot to go wrong on it, the control for it on the other hand is a possibility. The actuator for example could go bad but again very rare I would suggest, more likely the TPS attached to it or the throttle bodies TPS are much more common. If one of these fail or gets sticky then in effect the DME wouldn't be able to accurately set the position of the butterfly's on the TB's which could well lead to these problems.

I can't advise too much on the M54 engine as I don't know it as well (at all really!), but on the S54 for sure I would be changing the 2 TPS sensors as the first port of call along with the MAF although that would be throwing a separate code if that had gone badly wrong. I would then move on to o2 sensors and then the thermostat which could also cause these issues if faulty. Then the TB actuator with the TB's (or single TB the M54 has I believe) themselves virtually at the bottom of the list. As said, INPA/DIS would help a lot here and probably give you a better indication.
Along with all that, I could also be a VANOS issue, dodgy solenoid etc. Always deal with what you've got fault code wise first. Cam/crank sensors will usually throw a code if they start playing up so again unlikely this is the issue, it would be pretty far down my list of things to change.
Just to throw another one in there regarding the coolant temp sensor/potential thermostat, I know on cold start up with the S54 DME it uses readings from that sensor and MAF to control idle until up to temp, if this sensor was faulty it would cause the issues you mention as well.

This is all my opinion based on the S54 though, I couldn't really suggest whether this is cross compatible with the M54.

EDIT srhutch beat me to it but yes in essence different engines, likely different causes!

On the S54 the throttle position sensor warning could mean that the ECU thinks the two TPS are in disagreement, there is one on the actuator under the air intake plenum and the other on the bar where the six individual throttle flaps are driven from. Front one is easy to remove and check/replace. The one on the actuator is a bugger! Worth cleaning the idle control valve whilst the plenum is off.

Noted. But the symptoms are very similar. Both engines, even though type-different have the same operating principle and could help in cancelling out various things i'm looking at... Gotta cover all the angles if i'm to crack this myself! Last resort ofc is the indy...

Thx for replies and advice all.
Got cable for DIS coming and a few other bits n pieces.....
Hope to solve this next week...
