Luggage with roof down

Just thought I'd share this here in case it's useful for anyone else.

I want to take my Zed on a road trip around France sometime (although who knows when now?) and so I’ve been searching for luggage that will efficiently use the boot space when the roof is down. I’d considered a custom fit set but they’re a bit pricey and I’m never quick enough when they come up for sale preowned.

Then I saw these 60L expandable duffle bags on Amazon the other day which looked to have dimensions nearly the perfect size for an E89 (70cm width x 30cm depth x 28cm height), so I bought two:

They fit well vertically too, but horizontally leaves a decent area of space at the front for coats etc. I’m pretty impressed with the quality they seem quite tough, and include lots of features like a vented shoe/laundry compartment; zippers each side to reduce capacity to 50L; several internal & external pockets; shoulder strap. They’re not waterproof but I only want to use them for roof-down weather trips anyway.

Seems to just be the green in stock atm, but they also have a more basic style available in multiple colours: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZRK6XWV

I got them on sale at £46 for the pair which I think is a good deal really.

They look quite sturdy - the reviews seem to show the strap is weak at the connection point but overall looks like value for money. I have the fitted luggage set which I found brilliant when my partner and I drove to Spain for a month. This would be nice for a weekend or just a few days trip.

That looks a pretty good use of the space.

And it's amazing how light you can travel when you're forced to think about it (and I don't mean finding multiple ways of wearing your pants).

Good find..

Actually on reflection in some ways these are better than the fully fitted luggage.

I have a custom made 3 piece soft luggage set that fits perfectly in that space.

The issue is that you can’t then put coats etc in there with the top down...

On the flip side I guess if you have the top down you will probably want the coats in the cabin anyway.. :tumbleweed: l

Can’t argue with the price performance compared to custom luggage though.. :

They look good, ClumUK, and are a lot cheaper than the German stuff (made in China) https://www.koffer24.com/en/car-luggage-bmw/ that many here use. That said, they don't have wheels, so, if you're married/partenered/whatever, you have to carry both, of course. Still, for the money ...

If travelling for extended periods with limited luggage you can always follow the Motorcycling touring mantra, “ wear one spare one “. Has served me well on many occasions touring Europe by bike.

They look good value for money and as you point out leave some space for coats etc. I have a set of the German ones and yes they fit really well but are overpriced. Had I seen yours I wouldn’t have paid the extra money.

Saw these in the z4 Uk Facebook page which seems good value .

Apparently 4 of them fit quite snugly

Yes I did notice that in a couple of reviews and I'm not surprised really as the clip is such a bizarre design I've not seen before. It's chunky but then tapers at the end so the sides actually overlap. I can't comment on the durability yet as haven't had a chance to use them but personally I doubt I'll ever use the shoulder strap anyway.

:slaphead: I've never felt the need to wheel a bag from the car park to the hotel reception, but I did get some stick as the first thing out of her mouth when I showed them off was "Why both the same colour? You should've got his & hers!"
