lucky escape

I'm feeling lucky and unlucky at the same time. Had roof off for first time this year today - driving along M8 at paisley and a stone came flying over the top of the windscreen past my head and existed straight through he mesh of the wind deflector. I've now got what looks like a bullet hole in my mesh screen. Annoying thing is that only a couple of monhs ago I had a spare wind deflector and I gave it away to somebody on this site! Oh well back to ebay - console myself with the thought that the bullet hole could have been between my eyes. :|

 Sounds like you had a lucky escape. Brings into question whether you should drive at speed on the motorways with the roof down. A lot of debris flying about.

Mind you, many years ago I was driving an MGB and a plastic crate fell off one lorry under the wheels of a lorry behind it and it launched out and hit the metal top of my windscreen. Had I been in a saloon car, higher off the ground and with a bigger screen it would have come straight through the glass! Fate I suppose :)

OMG

if the roof had been up it may have caused some damage to it - also did it not hit the boot lid after it went through the wind break?

But very lucky escape indeed.

You could have ended up like (worse than) Massa. Better wearing helmet when the roof down.

I have had a tone hit me on the forehead driving with the roof down, luckily only 30-40mph at the time but that still hurt.

Shame about the wind deflector, but easier to replace that then you head.

Lucky escape indeed
the m8 can be a bugger for that, tho thankfully for me,i am usually in my works van :)

Nice to see a fellow local scotsman on here/there are a few

It's always going to be a risk wherever you are with the roof down and one that bikers take every time they ride. I think you can mitigate against the risk by keeping just a bit further back from traffic you are behind and brisk overtakes. But certainly a lucky escape for Nick11.

I think I would wear that hole as a badge of honour! Why don't you get one of those transparent bullet hole stickers for your windscreen too? Then tell a yarn about a drive by shooting?

Cough, cough :D

Saw a lovely black new Z4 on the M77 yesterday about 10am he was heading south I was going north.

Damn, that's scary!

You've got to wonder what damage that would've done to the softtop fabric had the roof been up, as surely it would've hit the roof (although it would be a glancing blow I guess).

BTW, Scottish Meet thread for you to check out :poke:

Very lucky - as you said much better to pay £50 for a new deflector than have a hole in the head.

Sure there's no damage to the boot?
