Loud whine, not high pitched.

Last night while driving on the motorway, a loud whine came from what seemed the back of the car. Imagine someone playing a garden hose like a clarinet but one note only.
Car was driving fine
No warning lights
Noise continued while in neutral
Noise diminished when reduced speed to 60mph and less
Noise went away
Any ideas?

If it continued in neutral it could well be a wheel bearing, I would check the the balancing weights are still present on both rear wheels.

No leaks around the diff, Wheels spin freely. Will look at weights. Had new tyres fitted 9 months ago though but may be.

what tyres were they? i had some avons a while back that developed a rippled circumference and therefore noticably hummed as a result.

They are called Kormoran. Tbh, I never paid attention, I had them changed when the old ones needed replacing. This is my son's car I was using.
