lots and lots of little scratches...

Managed to fit in an hour or so of quick cleaning today, but getting quite irritated by the sheer number of little scratches that appear over time. There must be literally dozens all over the body now. The cleaner and shinier the black the worse they seem to stand out.

When there was only a small handful of them I'd usually just get stuck in with polish & elbow grease but that doesn't seem to be enough to stay on top of them these days. Any suggestions for getting rid of them quickly and getting the nice perfect paint finish back again? Any tips to speed up the process or products to blend them in better? Or is it back to Colour Magic and elbow grease!!

Not tried it myself but you could give this a go.

Could sort the stone chips at the front too while you are at it!

As long as they have not gone through the top clear coat then it's possible to significantly reduce their appearance by rounding off the edges of the scratch with a rotary machine polisher. I saw this first hand yesterday on a intro training day where the instructor ran a key over the paintwork and then used the edge of the pad to round of the edges of the scratch.

The other thing I would look at is how they are getting there in the first place as they look a lot more severe than you'd expect to get from non optimal cleaning? The first picture almost looks like an animal has pulled its claws down the top of your wheel arch???

I think there's a couple of sources - careless passengers, careless people in car parks, as you suggest I reckon a cat or similar might bear some responsibility for some. The ones around the front end and bonnet are almost entirely stone chips or road debris accumulated over time. I could swear Britain's roads are steadily getting worse for general detritus that flies up and smashes windscreens, chips paintwork etc. There is one scratch which is embarrassingly my own fault caused while cleaning though. Nothing as silly as dropping the sponge into a pile of grit - no - I was doing a rush job power hosing it one day and accidentally tapped the hose off the side panel while spraying the far end of the car. There must've been grit and dirt stuck to the hose, because it scuffed the paint. It really pissed me off that day and now I'm more careful about where the hose and power washer are behind me!

When I had a black celica I had the same problem I found auto glym paint renovator would quickly remove lite scratches. Id then use super resin polish and ultra deep shine polish to get the shine back as I found it would leave the area looking a bit dull.
