loose sump bolts

Morning all,

While I was under the car doing the prop rebuild I noticed a fair amount of oil had been coming through the bottom cover and the alloy reinforcement plate. On investigation I found 4 of the sump bolts were no more than finger tight. 3 were at the rear right (drivers in the uk) side and one near the front. All of them had oil seeping down the bolts. I have very carefully re-tightened to 8NM but not done the extra 90deg turn and hope that will fix the problem.

Has anyone else had this issue ? Just wondering if it is common on these engines or maybe poor workmanship sometime in the past. The engine seems perfectly smooth running with no odd vibrations that I can detect.

Apologies the picture is sideways - not sure how to correct that....

Thanks.

Sounds like the sump has been off and not torqued back on properly.

Who was last underneath the car?

Many thanks. That was my conclusion. No-one has been near the sump while in my ownership.

Since my original post my indy has come back and said he has had to occasionally use locktight to stop this happening. Not common but not unknown.

So, could the culprit be the last person to do an oil change?
You don’t unbolt sump bolts to do an oil change.

Only the plug is removed...
