Loose Connections.

Yesterday I had the misfortune to hit some debris on the M40 and have damaged the nearside wheelarch plastic liner and the cover over the access point to the lights. I appear to have two disconnected electrical connections dangling. One is obviously the outside temperature guage as I have a permanent reading of minus 40 degrees, but I can't work out what the other one is. All the lights work (headlamps and driving lamps) as does the headlamp washer. Any thoughts?

The parts are on order and a temporary repair has been affected with gaffer tape. In addition there are a few scuffs and scratches on the lower part of the spoiler which I will probably entrust to Chips Away.

The car has been up on a ramp and there doesn't appear to be any other damage so think I got off quite lightly as it was quite a smack.

No idea what it was that I hit. It looked like a big mangled bit of plastic. (Probably even more mangled after I hit it!) Unfortunately I was unable to take much in the way of avoiding action due to the close proximity of traffic in the other lanes)

Def most likely the horn as they are both an extension of the same part of the loom. Failing that then I'd be going for foglight, but much less likely.

As an aside I'm trying to recall from last time I had that are apart if there was a spare loom extension tied up in that area.

There should be two wires.

A black wire, and a green wire.

The green wires are for your ambient temperature sensor.

The black wire should be connected to a black disc shaped object that fits into the wheel well liner. This is the thermal switch for the heated windshield washers.

It is part #10 in the following diagram:

If you see a blue wire, then that is for the smog sensor for automatic fan circulation (on automatic climate controls). On U.S. cars that is in the other wheel well, but it may be different for you.

Hope this helps.

There was a broken conical shaped bit of plastic with a probe in it on one wire (sensor for outside temperature?) and there was also the black disc shaped object described by Zed not Zee floating about, so thermal switch for heated windshield washers could be favourite.

I will be entrusting the repair work to my local independants, but it's good to have some ideas in advance of what the problem is likely to be; so thanks to all who responded.
