Looking for a practical way to mount my phone

I guess it's personal preference, but I've tried various windscreen/vent holders and not had much luck with them. Windscreen ones fall off after a while or if it's a sunny day the phone heats up too much (or vent mounted ones when the heating is on) plus they look a bit messy/tacked on with cables hanging over the dash. And I don't really want to be sticking magnets and stuff to the back of my phone.

I think the Brodit looks much neater, holds the phone securely and it's not permanent - there are no screws, it's held in by friction and a sticky tab which leaves no marks as I have used them in several cars before. Simply swap the car mount for the new car specific one, or swap the phone holder when I get a new phone.

Did you consider this? It's perfect for me. Solves many of the issues people describe above. With the vent mounts I was always worried about breaking the grill

What if you use the CD slot? Does this perch just inside or does it sit a substantial way inside?

Currently use a magnetic vent holder, but I actually prefer the phone without a case so looking at swapping to a kenu airframe, similar principle but held with a spring loaded clasp rather than a magnet.

Bumps also tend to make the phone tip with the magnet holder I find
 
I found that the phone in the CD slot mount can get in the way when moving your hand from the gear stick to the indicator stalk sometimes, especially if in a hurry; best I've found is the vent mounts, like KENU (expensive but very good), just close the vent on that side to stop overheating in winter.
 
I'm using the Yoshi magnetic vent mount - simple, low cost (£8)and works. Comes with 2 magnetic discs so you can use one for your phone and one for an i-pod. I have a Samsung S8 and its strong enough to hold that on securely. Easy to fit and never feels in danger of damaging the slats.

But look at the more recent post on page 2 in December.

I used a Brodit mounting bracket, along with a Quadlock holder. It's rock solid, no movement or vibration at all. You'll need a Quadlock phone case though.

I like the concept, however I don't like the case! Plus I've got two phones so makes it more of a hassle. Where did you get the actual car mount from? I'm thinking I could do something similar but with a magnet? :)

Yes, I did, thanks. Just got a few bits to tidy up on it, but otherwise it's still just as good as it was!

The actual bracket is the Brodit bracket. I didn't particularly like the Brodit phone holder, so I fixed a Quadlock mount to the Brodit bracket. You could fit the Brodit bracket (don't buy the cradle) and use some other method of mounting the phone, such as a magnet. Or just buy the Brodit cradle as well as the bracket.

Just be aware, if you have a leather dash, the gap opener tool won't work. You'll need to remove the air vents (maybe stereo too, can't remember) to loosen the dash fixing bolts. But that's very easy to do.
 
On the subject of 'mounted phones'.
In London the kids drive up either side of you on scooter, the passenger side distracts the driver, the drivers side grab the blower.
Job done and off to sell it for a chunk of crack!

Thats if your windows down of course.

That's London for you though.
 
Recall this set up was suitable for cup holders but could be adapted for mobiles?

Possibly an expensive optional extra though.

Pictures as requested. I have mounted both ways on occasion to higher/lower the phone. You can't use the CD player and buttons to radio can be an issue. However, normally I use the Grom so doesn't matter. Most of time I don't use anyway, only long journey/when in need of sat nav.
