my current toy is a 2015 ariel atom 3.5/245
thanks for any advice and tips relating to the 1.8 or 2L cars

Hey there Rocket Man.

The rumour is the new car will be announced next year, but you'll need north of 70k if again the rumour is correct.

You can't buy a new E89 now, production stopped in August, however have a look on the BMW website as there are some pre-registered cars, including mostly 18i and 20i cars available from various dealers.

Sorry I can't comment on these engines, I've only briefly test driven a 20i TBH it felt underpowered, the E89 is a fairly heavy car at approx 1400kgs for the non 35 range, after a Boxster you'll notice a big difference, but as always it depends on what you're after, test a few, there's plenty for sale at the dealers and privately.

Hope you find the forum to your liking.

Hi Rocket Man, welcome to the forum. Despite the differing numbers, the 18i, 20i and 28i all use the same 2 litre 4 cylinder engine in different states of tune. I don't believe there's much difference between them in economy terms.
Good luck with your search.
Cheers, Dave

Hi
I just sold my Boxster S 987 Gen 2 and moved into a 35i Z4
The car is as quick as the Boxster in a straight line but not round corners obviously.
I test drove a 23i and and did notice the lack of ooomph compared to the Porker
Given the choice as a working car i'd take the Zeed everytime, its a much more comfortable place to be.
I've had 3 Boxsters now and didnt realize what a great car the Beemer was until i had one.
The build quality, materials and equipment is exceptionally high imho

Very interested in your comparisons between the Boxster S and the 35i. These are the very 2 cars on my shortlist. Can you give us a more in depth review?

You really should try test driving them both back to back
The Boxster is very light compared to the Zed, lift the boot lid there is nothing to it
The Zed is a much more solid car.
I dont think on normal road driving the Porsche would be that much faster than the Beemer but on a track it would be much more noticeable.
The one i have just sold was a 3.4 S with PDK box and the 35i is a DCT, theyre pretty similar to use but i think the BMW is better in fully auto, the Porsche just tried to get into 7th as fast as possible round town, also the DCT is faster than the PDK imo
The Porsche PDK works the opposite way round to the Zed, that made for one or two exciting shifts when my mind lapsed
The build quality on both cars is superb but the Zed has a more airy and modern feeling cabin
The boot space in the Boxster is very good with front and back boots.
The fuel consuption is comparable but i think the beemer has the edge, Insurance on the Porsche is a little more but only a few £'s for me
The only thing i really miss from the Porsche is the huge centrally mounted Tacho and the digital speedo read out.
For me, at this time, i prefer the Zed and so does my wife, and when Mrs Kinger likes my cars it makes my life so much easier.

I loved my 2.7 Boxster, 2003 plate can't remember what model number but it was a pleasure to drive and saved my life with its perfect mid-weight balance during one hairy high speed aqua-planing experience

It was also more practical, but for pure driving pleasure my z4 35i manual wins hands-down. It is a flawed car but that adds to its character, and whether commuting 150 miles a day or burning up the country roads on a weekend it never fails to put a big fat smile on my big fat face

Mike the 89 had a digital speedo in the computer options. You might be able to choose it through idrive. I don't have idrive but chose it with Carly coding.

OP you asked about 2litre. I have one and love it. All the power I need for commuting and touring. Decent fuel consumption and fun. But I have to say it is my first car if this type and have never driven a Porsche so while it thrills me ....,

welcome to the forum. Judging by the cars you have had previous unless you go for the 35is you will notice a big difference in performance and may end up disappointed. Test all models before buying.

Good hunting

just put a deposit on a delivery milage 2l white, black leather 19" wheels S drive M sport 2016 car. At £24700 i think it represents good value for money. Always liked the look of the E89 a lot more than both the Boxster and the SLK. The 987/2 Boxster Spyder i had was nice, stylish but expensive (2010 cars fetching between 38K to 50K for a low milage good spec car)
The Z4 is for daily use to replace my Mini Paceman so performance is not an issue. I needed an open top car for those sunny bright cool days as i love open top motoring.
As for performance i have my 2015 Ariel Atom 3.5/245, all the performance anyone could ever wish for but only in nice warm weather and we dont get that much of that.
I am sure the Z4 will offer me all i require as a daily transport and cant wait to collect it.
I would have liked a red interior but deceided against due to wearing jeans a lot and red doesn't seem to like blue jeens.
One extra the car has and i always like on a daily driver is parking sensors as both the Boxster i had and my Atom dont have them and you can't see anything at the back
