A real cruiser gear would be great, I reckon on the torque curve that the z4m could easily cruise at 70mph @ 1200rpm, would certainly help with combined mpg.

These days, I like the odd short motorway trip using 4th, the noise and response is awesome for those quick overtakes before returning to left lane, and it just feels surprisingly super smooth sitting in 4th

My 1987 M535 was also quite low geared I thought even if it was 5 speed,great pick up without dropping too far down the box though.
