Long daily commutes by car

How do people do them? Just drove from Essex to Oxford and it's just immensely frustrating - it seems that NOBODY understands the concept of moving to the left if empty!

I do my long commute on Mon & Thur/Fri and stay in a B&B the rest of the week.

210 miles from Liverpool to London takes 3.5h on a good day to 5 hours if I avoid the jams and go cross-country.

Although it has been known to take 4 hours to do the 70 miles from Brentford to my mate near Colchester.
