The original BMW lollipop bushings are oil filled. They get a hole and leak the oil out.
Easy way to check them is to put a breaker bar on a front wheel bolt and feel the bushing. Stress the wheel in the 3 to 9 o'clock locations and see if there is too much movement at the bushing. There should be next to no movement.
