I have never had an issue in my coupe either , I think it's perceived by some to be posing in a roadster and by shouting / swearing and gesturing they are trying to belittle & cause embarrassment, probably through envy . I also have a TR 6 which rarely has the roof up but have never had negative comments . it's probably not viewed with the same sort of image though .just my thoughts. Chris

I can agree with this... Some family teasingly call me a poser when I drive with the top down. My response is always something like, "can't I enjoy driving a convertible without it having anything to do with posing?"

I've never had a comment from another driver but was once crawling along in traffic when a chav on the pavement shouted 'w4nker'. I just smiled and carried on safe in the knowledge that he probably had a rusty 'bad boy' Saxo sat on bricks in his front garden...

+1 I agree with that in my experience. It's almost like it becomes their time of the month as soon as they start the engine.

Think I can remember one white van drive past me shaking the coffee beans not long after I'd got the car. Since then I can't remember getting any crap. Maybe with the more limited view of a tin-top we just don't see see or hear them :) I think people probably see you as some sort of easier target if you're in a convertible. Higher chance that you'll see their gestures - they'd probably feel a bit of a tit saying something so witty and waving their arms around if they weren't even noticed.
 
I think its all about having the roof down, people think you're asking for it, especially if it's not above 28 degrees.

It's not a showy thing, i just like being out in the open air so it doesnt have to be boiling..
 
I have my roof down in all weathers, and other than odd looks when it's cold I've had no issues. Car did get keyed once though (don't park there anymore).

Most of the reactions have been positive - especially on the continent.
 
My experience is slightly different.
Since a week of my M coupe ownership, just about everyone wants to race me.

Not sure if they've called me a w*nk*r as I can't see that far back in my rear view mirror. :)
 
Best thing is pull alongside- or in front for a minute- have a laugh and use 'designated appropriate hand gesture'!!- and give it the beans!!
Bad envy is all it is!!
 
I had 'Show off!' from a van the other day, that's it.
Considering that the car makes me appear more sexually attractive
I can live with that.
 
I'm going to turn up to a z4-forum meet in my own white van purely just to hurl abuse at everyone :P

Well if you try to drive up the arse of the car in front I reckon it won't hang around for long :D
Also stereotypes obligate you to letch at any passing female and keep a copy of the Sun or Daily Record (in Scotland) on your dash...

You're forgetting about the Daily Sport... It's true though: when a few of us have a hire van through work it's surprisingly easy to fall into the sterotypical WVM.

My van's about 1% Z4 anyway (the seats) so I'm sure that's enough for it to be allowed at meets :D

Actually I have been having this experience a fair bit. Very annoying, not to mention stressful, albeit quite fun sometimes when I'm in the mood :driving:
