litre of engine oil later and the oil gauge hasnt moved!

it didn't ask me to "add 1L" but it was on 2 bars when I was checking (3 bars like 3 days ago)

I put a litre of 5w-30 castrol edge or whatever in and then did the oil check and its still on 2 bars...... I took it for a quick hoon to see if it would change but it still says 2 bars!


should I add more or what?!?!

No, you should of left it, only add oil when it asks for it.

It might have slightly too much now, hopefully not enough to worry about.

why hasn't the oil level changed... it did in my previous z4?
 
I sometimes found the sensor mis read on my old car, but as Jan said you shouldn't add any oil until it says, certainly not a litre anyway.

if sensor misread then isn't there a risk of the engine running out of oil?
 
I've no idea what the overfill tolerance is but +1L is potentially enough to cause some problems, although it's unlikely to be enough to cause foamed oil starvation or hydraulic lock (new engine jobs :cry: )

Your oil sensor probably isn't working correctly and isn't something to chance so I'de get it checked ASAP (If you decide to drain it and re-fill the TIS specification is 6.5 L with a filter change or approx 6.3L without filter change on your e85/86 3.0si).

.....think I'll drain the oil out, replace the sensor and put new oil and filter in during it -.-
 
2 bars is half a Litre so 600ml should be fine.

I think if you add 1 litre when it asks for it that way it gives a more accurate reading.

Make sure the engine is up to temp and on level ground before checking.

the thing is....will it ask for it if it is a faulty sensor ?!?!
 
A while back I had my gauge showing 1 bar down so I added 1/4 quart and went out for a drive, result was no change in the gauge reading. Returned home and parked it. The following day while driving into work the gauge indicated full. I suspect there may be some delay in the sensor level reading/averaging/reporting....?

i'll check it in a few hours when I drive to go to a drive thru cinema :D
