I didn't realise it was the norm to have a symbol? Thought it was silly my jag had one when the sidelights were on but not another one for the dipped beam.

I don't have one either. I always thought this was a little strange, all the other cars I have owned had a green symbol for dipped headlights.

I guess I have got used to it now.

Apart from the console backlighting that is switched on together with the headlights, there is a green LED just above the headlight switch (not in the console).

The console backlighting coming on isn't enough of a clue?

Might be different on the e89 if the console backlighting is on all the time ? E85/6 are different as you say, the console lighting comes on only when the lights are on... Except in the M where the instrument binnacle is lit (and white, not orange) all the time.

In daylight the console lighting can be hard to see sometimes - I can tell when mine are on because the submarine / down lights next to the interior dome light reflect in the silver trim of my gear knob.

I have a little green light between speedo and tacho that comes on with the lights.

I didn't have one on #69 but just assumed it was the custom electronics and they couldn't be arsed to code that in as the icon was there. Perhaps the bulb was blown...

Edit - I have an E85 facelift not an E89

Interesting. Just checked and mine doesn't have that light...

Sorry for the e85 thread hijack

Nope, not really. I'm as blind as a bat, I see long distance quite clearly but the console is a blur. A green light would be a great help.

Hmm ... I see the problem. I'm getting a bit far-sighted myself (old age), but I can stll make out the numbers on the speedo. My old E85 has a litte brightness adjustment control that can be turned up high enough that the backlight is quite visible even in daylight. Don't know if other models have that though. Is there some sort of aftermarket solution?
