I think all earnings over £100k should be taxed at a rate of 102%. The wealthy need to pay their fair share.

It's not those on over 100K. It's the super rich and their ever increasing loopholes meaning they pay less tax than their cleaners. Employees on PAYE are hosed at whatever level they earn

The point is that all politicians of all parties are way past their sell by dates. We need something like the 5 star movement (and no, not the sh1te eighties band) and get rid of the parasites we are blessed with. Close all the tax loopholes, set up one rate of tax that everyone pays, and set it such that there's a threshold below which you don't pay tax if that's fair and then make sure everyone pays. Why should high earners pay more of their income than a middle earner or a low income person. High middle earners are frequently less of a burden on the state. If their kids are privately educated then they are not a burden on state schools (there's no tax rebate for that) and if they have private health insurance they pay tax on the insurance policy (and benefit in kind tax if it's company provided) and don't burden the NHS either.

Politicians are in it for one thing only, to stay in power as long as possible paid for by you and I. They do that by taxing the arse off of all of us. We are paying around 70% of our incomes in direct and indirect taxation. That's right, for every 10 hours you work, you probably get the benefit of 3 of them. Crazy eh?

Declaration. Yes I'm a high earner. Three of my kids went to some kind of public school (for sixth form, they won scholarships or I couldn't have afforded it), I have private health insurance and I'm on PAYE. I paid more in tax last year than I earned in total 5 yrs ago. I worked bloody hard to earn it and I resent giving it to the taxman. I don't vote conservative (I don't vote at all any more as there's no "F*ck off, you're all useless" box)

So don't tell me about paying my fair share, go to the multi squillionaires and those businesses that exploit loopholes so they can pay f*ck all and tell them.

BANG ON STU!

How about this idea.

Scrap PAYE altogether, scrap NI and Income tax altogether.
This then makes it pointless to have accounts overseas, it makes it pointless to work cash in hand and it stops all the benefit cheats who "clean windows" etc. Basically remove tax at point of earning.

Then slap a huge chunk of VAT on everything and I mean everything that is bought. No exemptions, no way of claiming back against tax etc etc. Just whack on the VAT.

Then everybody is paying tax appropriate to what they spend. There is total visibility and nobody can cheat the system.

Simples!

Because then the rich would earn here, and take their money to another country to spend...

Leaving the not so rich here to pay extortionate rates of VAT

That assumes that you work on the principle of "people who earn more should pay more" - which kind of negates the point in attempting to achieve a higher salary, no?

If you work 60 hour weeks, have spent 10 years working your arse off for a degree, MBA, whatever - working to get to a strong career high point, and you earn say.. 100k? You're essentially paying more for the same item (through various taxes), as joe bloggs who doesnt work hard, just works part time because he wants beer money and didn't go to any effort to get where he/she is now.

I still see this as a bit of a - if you work hard, earn well, you get punished for it? Maybe it's just me.

I do agree with taking the lowest earners out of tax, though - for the sake of ensuring a minimum standard of living.

Possibly. They mostly have offshore accounts and dodge taxes anyway. Look at Jimmy Carr.
At least they would pay some on the stuff they do buy here like houses, supercars, golf club memberships, clothing, food, drink etc
No VAT exemptions and a flat rate would be cheap to administer and police. There would be no hidden cash economy and it would be fairer all round.

Except smuggling would run rampant, the black market would explode and no way of protecting low income families, the retired etc.

It's interesting when you look at an example in the US. Oregon has no purchase tax with a high income tax, where neighbouring Washington state has lower income tax and a purchase tax. People are always working out which state to live and work in to make it most advantageous to their incomes.

I think my other flaw is that some people choose to save in one way or another.
Dammit back to the next big idea!
Focus Group anyone?

It isnt the Jimmy Carrs of this world that bother me ....... its the George Osbournes that feel its ok for them to purchase a second class rail ticket but sit in the 1st class carriage.... top marks to the Guard/Ticket collector on Virgin Rail for sticking to his guns and making him pay up.
And not forgetting the same cretin Osbourne that flipped his second home in Notting Hill when he sold it to avoid Capitol Gains tax,
And I cant leave out David Cameron who bleets about tax avoiders while forgetting the millions he inherited were accrued by the very same offshore tax avoidance ....

And just who are these faceless a**holes that feel its ok to embarrass the Jimmy Carrs of this country while manipulateing the laws and their positions to further their and their friends own ends ?

presumably people live and work in Washington State and shop in Oregon.
or are there border tarrifs?

I think it's more complicated than that. No border tax though. I like going there on business, it's the cheapest place ever to buy gadgets!
