Lens ideas

I spent 3 1/2 hours stood in the pouring freezing rain taking photos of the WRC cars in the holding area during SS1 of the Rally Wales. Got a couple of decent shots in that I might post on here later.

I must be honest, i'm not that impressed with the stock lens that came with the camera. Any ideas of a good quality all round lens that I could consider to replace. It would need to be Canon fitment. I'm taking a guess at a budget of £200-300.

Are there any specialist sites I could visit that offer second hand lenses ????

Cheers

Matt

I use a Tamron 18-270 on my Eos50d most of the time. It has served me well and I have had some cracking shots from it. The 18 give reasonable width whilst the 270 gives really good length. I think for a dslr you have to multiply by 1.6? So 18 is equivalent to 28.8m and 270 is equivalent to 432. It is a fairly hefty lens but does have anti shake on board. You may be able to get agood used one for around 300 squids, new maybe about 340?

I have heard that the Tamron is a decent alternative to a Canon lens. Petach - are the photos you have been submitting to the monthly comps via this lens ?

This was taken on the Tamron at focal length of 270mm, F6.3, 1/2000 sec. spot metered and ISO3200. No tripod and from about 100 ft away from subject. Considering I have Parkinson's with quite severe tremor in left hand....pretty damned good for a middle of road lens. Cropped from picture below this one

I used the tammy for the comp shot where I had the Zed all shot up, bullet holed and camo'd up. I also used it for a night shot where I had light trails behind it (last month or month before? It was also used for my November comp shot.
