Legacy NCB

In 2016 in reduced my car ownership to one - I sold my Discovery 3 on which I had 12yrs or more NCB ( I owned a Z4 and the Disco 3)

Now I might be buying my daughters Golf to use while the Z4 is in hibernation. I don’t want to swap or suspend the Z’s insurance but was hoping to start a new policy using the NCB gained on the Discovery - but that was four years ago?

Has anyone any idea how long an unused / legacy NCB remains valid for please?

Sadly it's usually only 2 years.

But you might find an insurer who will mirror your existing NCB - that's what I did when I first got a 2nd car (my 1st Z4).

From similar past experience you will be lucky if it carried over 12months :( as ever , its insurance , lube up & prepare to bend

That’s what I feared!
A mirrored bonus is my best hope - My Z is thro Chris Knott so that’s a job for tomorrow.

I have a feeling I’ve been told 2 years before. As ever, it’s a one way street with insurance.

In reality though, to insure a Golf would be what, £200 a year?

When I added a car to the fleet, it did not add a lot at all, but it was on a multi car policy though. Can you have a multi car with your daughter’s new car as well?

I'd not worry too much - i did a lot of (bored) testing of various comparisons and quotes to work out that my NCB is worth less than 10% of the premium, so.. you're not missing much as far as i can tell! I had admiral mirror my primary NCB to a second vehicle the other day and it saved me less than a round of beers in my local.

If it’s only £200 (ish) a year then it’s not worth the worry !
My daughter tells me the VED is only £20 as well

So £220 / 250 to have it available while the Z is hibernating isn’t bad - add the fact it’s a hatch back into the mix it’s a no brainier. The other car is a 335 saloon so a hatch might come in very handy once in a while.

My Golf is £110 to insure, the Abarth £140 so they are not big money items.

When I got an additional car through my Admiral multi car policy they mirrored my no claims back in June.

Even when I bought a Jag XFR last December I never even asked about no claims and my policy then had 0 years on it was still only a couple of hundred quid.

It all seems to indicate a reasonable premium - The Z is currently thro Chris Knott, so i will see what they offer first

I kicked up enough of a stink in the past to use my NCB on both cars because frankly the whole concept is absolutely disgusting and nothing more than an excuse to fleece you of money.

Admittedly this was probably around 10 years ago (when I had two cars, I since have only ran 1)

The limit is 2 years - talk nice and your current company should match your current policy, mine did when I gave up my company car and purchased a second one, instant full no claims.

Seemed a little expensive but at least I can switch next year with max NCB
