Left ignition on

Idiot of the month here left the ignition on (not running) over night and the battery is obviously completely dead. Tried using a donor car to jump off however the ignition comes on but when it tries to turn over all I hear is clicking noise and the ABS light.

Any idea? Coil burnt out?

Most likely still the battery. Try and charge the battery independently and if that doesn't work it's likely new battery time.

On old cars that would have been a problem as coil would have overheated and probably caught fire. On modern engines that shouldnt be a problem and I would imagine it is the battery but not sure why it will not take a jump. Make sure you have the polarity right when you jump from another car.

Could be cheap or poorly connected jump cables. Could also be that battery is old and a complete discharge has damaged it.

Could be the donor hasn't got enough guts. I tried to start my X5 with a jump to a Freelander. Nothing but clicking although enough juice to get the boot open.

New battery fitted and it started, no problem.

Cheers guys!

Turns out my Qashqai (donor) didn't have enough power to charge it. Green flag came out within 15mins and started straight away with the great excuse to go for "charge up" drive into the Y'Dales.

can you try leaving the jump car running charging your for 20 mins or so?

Initially tried that, will no joy. But least it was sorted in time to enjoy the rare sunshine even though it start snowing in the hills.

Hah - I guess I have to share that award with you as I did the exact same thing last week. Just left mine on the Ctek charger for about 2.5 days while I waited for the 'fully charged' light to come on and it fired up perfectly. Had to reset the windows, but everything else ok, including the radio.
Probably need to look for a replacement battery as mine's the original 2008 battery and I've no idea how the previous owner(s) treated it.
