Leaky Diff

Is it common to get some leakage from the diff ? My car's up on ramps at the moment having new tyres fitted, and the areas above the diff have quite a bit of oil on them. It's not wet or dripping, so I'm not majorly concerned, just curious. Pics :

Be the shaft seals starting to go. Was a common problem on the e46 M3's.

I'd make sure that the diff oil is correctly topped up and look at getting the seals changed. Seals are about £12 each but it's getting to the bloody things :headbang:

Very much so

So, common issue, cheap parts but PITA fix... Could be something for the next service. Diff oil was changed at the last service 8.5k miles ago, so *should* be ok.

As mark said common issue. At Wales last year the techs said not to worry about it. You indi would say something if they needed doing.

Yeah, they've said not to worry in the past, there's just more than I remember. I shall consign to the Least Worry bin in my head :D

Had the same issue, think it cost somewhere around 150-200 to get it fixed, by the sounds of it not a big deal

I've actually just picked my car up today from having this sorted out. It was mentioned when I had it serviced that there was a slight leak and to keep an eye on it and go back if it gets worse, or have the oil level checked every 6 months. At the time there were no marks on the drive, but then last weekend I moved the car and saw that it had started properly leaking and made a big mark, then after a few hours parked in a different spot it had leaked enough to make me worry

If it does that I'll notice it on the garage floor... And get it fixed ASAP

I had the diff seal replaced as a cautionary maintenance a couple of years ago, but it's common for the seal area to be 'sweaty'.
As others said just keep an eye on oil drops in the garage under the car.
