Leaky Diff + First Post

Dear all,

I purchased a sapphire black Z4M Roadster earlier this year (BK09MHZ). It has started to weep oil around the input shaft - nothing too serious but I can see a few drops on the undertray. I was wondering whether anyone had any recommendations of specialists near London that would be suitable to carry out the job of replacing all of the seals? I have been using Munich Legends until now but am looking to change after a bad experience last weekend. Also does anyone have any advice on using OEM-spec oil with friction modifiers vs oil without any FMs?

I will try and upload some photos of the car when I get round to cleaning it - perhaps this weekend!

Thanks,
Z4FouruM

They just did the input shaft on mine. FM is only needed if the diff is noisy.

Give them a call.

I've been using TWG Automotive Ltd in Camberley for the last 5 years. http://www.twgautomotive.co.uk/

Will, the Principal, and at least one of his Techs are both ex-Sytner and I'm pretty sure he looks after a couple of other forum members' MCs.

Nearly forgot, welcome to the forum.

Depends where abouts in London you are, but if South of the river, ETA Motorsport in Brands Hatch are very good and 5 mins from M25 J3.

Welcome to the Z4Forum and congrats on your purchase of an M roadie.

I would recommend using genuine BMW diff oil with FM booster (83222282583 x3). I also recommend swapping out the drain plug (33117525064).

Get in touch with Lee at BMS Surrey. I also live in London, used to service at Munich Legends, but have since swapped back to BMS and have had no issues. Whoever you pick do not take your car to Technosport in Cricklewood.

However, what happened at Munich Legends?

Yes, I've heard good things about BMS in Leatherhead as well - my sister had a job done on her Mini by them and was very pleased with it.

Funny you mention technosport, I had an annoying experience with them. Asked them to take a look at a noise I heard coming from the vanos few years back, to the point where they asked me to swap the vanos for a working one to see if the noise was coming from there. Decided to get a second opinion from CPC, Phil had a listen and in 5 mins said this is normal vanos sound!! Saved me a few hundred quid on labour.

Thank you all for the advice- I took it to Biddenden Motor Works this morning to do the input seal and they were fantastic. I will take the car back to them for its rod bearing service over the winter months.

Munich Legends messed me around over the bank holiday weekend - they were doing a wheel bearing while I waited (a 45 min- 1hr job). I was asked me to arrive at 8am so they could fit me in as the first job but they didn’t start for 2 hours. They also didn’t have the parts which I had ordered from them to pick up. No complaints about the quality of their work but waking up at the crack of dawn to get down there, my girlfriend waiting with me, cancelling lunch plans with friends I very rarely see and then getting stuck in the bank holiday exodus from London is enough to persuade me not to go back (notwithstanding the parts that I have to now re-order).
