Laughable Insurance Quote...!

This morning I received a lovely letter from AXA Direct insurance stating that they were very sorry that they missed out on my insurance for the last 2 years and that this year they had some wonderful news...especially for me.

If I was to call them by the end of March and sign up, they had quotes especially agreed for me and my car from £199 fully comp 'cos they WANT MY BUSINESS!!

So I called. Gave them my special valued customer code off the letter and was told happily that they still didn't know who I was.

So I went through the standard questions and then agreed into a recording machine that if I told any porkies to them ever ever ever then I would be flogged in public and my insurance voided. Hmmm.

Anyway, 15 mins after commencing my money-saving call to my new buddies at Axa, the girl came back with a great price, especially agreed and approved by her manager of...

£2187

Yep. Now I know that sounds a little more than my £577 renewal quote my existing insurer sent me but hang on a minute.... it did include a courtesy car.

But I'm sure I could actually buy one for the £1500 extra that I would be giving them.... I pointed this out but the girl still thought her deal was much better.

I did then query if her price was for 11 years cover up front as very nearly its 11 x what they said in the letter it would cost me. Alas no.

I then asked if my extensive modifications to the car may have affected the premium, the total being swapping my plastic shift knob for a leather one. She asked me if it was a manufactuer's approved part. I said it was and was told it wouldn't affect my premium but should advise them in writing just to be safe :o

So, as I was busily trying to say no once and for all, I was told with excitement they would throw in legal cover just for me... for FREE.

Worth £12.

I was tempted to ask if it would keep me out of jail if one day I happened to strangle a insurance salesperson by accident.... but I didn't

Why do they bother eh?

BMW Insurance did something similar to me when I bought an M3 from a main dealer. They apparently give you 7 days free cover on an AUC, so I phoned. Turns out they take you through the whole list of questions to get a fully policy; I kept stressing that I already had cover arranged and she could not beat it but no, I am sure we can sir. Then at the VERY end she says 'oh sorry, you are under 25 so we can't cover you on an M3. I hope you find cover as its unlikely you will get any at your age'. So you have just wasted 20 minutes of my time AND ignored the fact I just told you I already have cover arranged thank you!

When I phoned my insurance company for a quote they went through all the questions with me, then finally told me they would not be able to insure me because I was under 25 (I had just turned 25 a few weeks ago), so I said no I AM 25 :? check my birth date and er.... todays date. She said no, the computer said I was still 24 so they couldn't insure it :x I told her 'erm, I think I know how old I am' and she had to calculate the dates (which took a while) and I was put on hold with some lovely calming music and then she came back and said yes I can confirm the you ARE 25 - gee thanks :headbang:

Oh that's so funny and true the way Insurers work...

I just do the entire thing the opposite way. Find the cheapest stripped down quote I can on the internet call my insurer and tell them it. They then match it or better it.

This year they had to really work hard and only got there by matching the quote £ for £ then throwing in a £50 gift voucher, which as we shop there is as good as cash.

While they stitch up the naive and lazy with stupid quotes they are equally stupid themselves with price promises and efforts to retain customers

Phil - did you declare all your mods?

I was really tempted to add a Gruppe M to my car, but the small print on my policy states that NO modifications are allowed (they even mention a change of gear knob)

For sure I did. The one they baulked at was the hard top. They wanted to classify it as a major body alteration if it was a permenant fixture. That made me laugh

Have you ever seen the episode of Top Gear where Clarkson's trying to get a quote on a Veyron? The guy asks him if that's a Rover! It's kinda like that. I ended up getting insured through the first company that understood what I was talking about. Price was good too, £460 fully comp.

I've got three cars insured with Tesco. The prices and cover are good and I get extra discount for insuring more than one vehicle.

I still don't have the entusiasm to call any more companies yet as I'm still feeling drained from my call with AXA!!

Actually, Abbey is my current insuance broker (I cannot remember the actual insurance company providing the cover - I think Prestige??), Abbey have always been quite good in terms of dealing with them and they price matched last year to keep my business.

Here in Northern Ireland insurance is always more expensive than mainland UK and a lot of the mainland based insurers aren't interested in covering us here. I have two other problems, firstly that - despite not having an accident (I had a no-fault claim when a Tesco driver hit my parked car 3yrs ago) for the past 9yrs and driving 45k miles on Irish roads for business each year - I'm still a bad risk because I have a company car.

Secondly, where i park my Zed is declared high risk. In a car park protected by electric gates, hidden from public view and protected by not only our own security cameras but 8 of the 15 armoured cameras attached to the police station next door  its still higher risk than if I parked it on a private drive in front of my house.

But the renewal is not due for another 3 weeks yet, so I have time.

Dogman - who do you use for insurance??

I was with them for a good few years, but this year Privilege were miles cheaper!
