Latest Mod - H&R monotube coilovers

Hi,

I thought I would share my latest mod to the Z as its really starting to come together now, although I am sure my wallet would disagree...

So what have I done? I managed to source a set of H&R monotube coilovers from Erol another forum member. Whilst these are only height adjustable, and I was considering a fully adjustable set, at the price agreed I decided to give them a go.

I decided to have a go at fitting these myself and found it quite enjoyable in the end. There was a fantastic guide here:

http://www.billswebspace.com/BMWZ4MKWV3SuspensionInstallationDIY.htm

I took my time and had it installed in about 2 days. Front first then the rears. I have since then spent the odd hour here and there setting ride hight.

So first impressions are good, they are dubbed a 'fast road coilover' and certainly don't appear to be too harsh, in fact probably a better ride than my previous setup which was oem shocks with Eibach springs.

Body roll seems to be controlled better but I haven't had a chance to really push them as it was a bit damp on the test run.

So far so good then... It seems better than stock in ride and road holding but further testing and a full alignment is required, but for the road I would already happily recommend them.

As some of you may know I also like the odd track excursion hence my initial want for a fully adjustable set. How will they stand up on the track? Well I have a day booked at bedford to give it a shake down on the 16th Feb so I will report back.... But after today I'm looking forward it!

I managed to take a few pics, apologies for quality it was on my phone. Also since these I have raised the front a few mm...

Glad you got them fitted all good its time consuming but well worth the effort installing them yourself. It made the car feel like a go kart i hope you enjoy them and put the miles on them that i didn't manage.

Your coupe looks great!!!   Amazing what a difference an inch lower makes in the car's overall appearance. I installed a set of H&R coil overs about a month ago and I think your initial handling impressions are spot on.

Thanks for the positive comments chaps.

And thanks again Erol for the bit of phone support during install!!

JRainlay - glad your enjoying them too. I was using the photo you posted whilst trying to set my ride hieght. Do you know what yours is exactly?

For reference, I have been measuring from the floor to top of arch at the highest point and have it set at 645mm front and 655mm rear.

It seems ok I had a little rubbing at first on the front but it was a few mm lower at that time. A bit of a tweak of the front wheel arch with a couple of cable ties seem to have sorted it. But not sure they are still needed now its higher. I suspect that its because of the offset of these wheels, being my road wheels they are reps and the offset at the front is et39 rather than 44 of the oem csls iirc

Will be interesting when I put on the oem csls as to whether I can still run the 12mm spacers on the front as I was previously.

Looks awesome in that colour with red caliper and the low ride height. Will be ibnteresting how they stand to track use.

Outside of the scope of the post but what disks are thee? Are they the one provided with the AP BBK?

Cheers buddy, yeah they are the standard disks which come with the AP kit, grooved but not drilled.

Another side question on brakes, the AP BBK kit provides both Front and Rear kit or you got these as separate kits?

I bought them as seperate kits, you can just buy the caliper kit for the rear and use the oem disk but i thought it would look odd having a mix of disks. Amber Performance is a good place to get them, they also let you spec what pads you want in them which is a nice touch.

Agreed one of the best mods I have ever done to a car. Transforms it when on the track. :-)

DONDP.... people think this is me being over the top.... the only brakes that ive ever felt that offer the same feel and brake retardation was a 997 gt3... on ceramics. They really are that good.... i can throw every drop of 500HP at them and they shrug it off.

That looks an amazing combination on Imola not to mention how it will drive now!

I'm supposed to be keeping this one standard arghhhh must stop looking at these modification threads!!

hi,

whereabouts do these measurements sit within the adjustable range, are they at either extremity of the adjustability?

thanks..
