You should get a decent spec for that amount.

Core i5 (3rd gen), better than 4GB ram and as big a hard disk as you can find

All the rest comes down to personal preference on look and feel, screen size etc

I doubt you'll get touch within budget, which is a shame as its the main differentiator for Windows 8

Go for a decent brand. Toshiba, Lenovo, HP, Dell, Samsung, Acer, Asus etc

If it helps, whenever I've put my hand in my pocket for a laptop, I've always ended up buying Toshiba. Great spec for the money and warranty extensions are cheap (the last one cost me £45 to extend to 3yrs)

Lenovo i5: but 13.3" so not sure if you want a bigger screen

John Lewis are always open to price match, and they offer a 2yr warranty as standard I think

Their sales guys consistently come out top when we do a mystery shopper exercise to see if our training has sunk in

warranty is a must.

personally you might want to keep your eye out on amazon for ram rather than choosing a higher model specifically for the memory. I went with a 16gb upgrade kit (same speed as factory memory) for a little over £40 before Xmas of Amazon. (I know 16 is overkill but you can never have enough and it was cheap!)

Same kit has now gone up to £65.

Instead look for a good processor (i5 or i7) and that has a decent graphics chip on it. Yes in a month it all become old and much cheaper, but you want to ensure that it'll last you for a fair few years!
