Any IT gurus on here? My old laptop has given up.... :headbang:

The Laptop:

Dell Inspiron
OS: Vista Professional (32 bit)

Can give more info on the laptop if it helps fix it....

Right - the problem:

I was trying to install a program, but it wouldnt install. I turned DEP off after looking at a guide on internet (bcdedit.exe /set nx {current} AlwaysOff - via Command Prompt).

I restarted the computer, but now it wont boot

I've managed to get this error when booting from Recovery Disc:

Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6001.18000.6.0.6001.18000
Problem Signature 03: 6
Problem Signature 04: 720906
Problem Signature 05: NoRootCause
Problem Signature 06: NoRootCause
Problem Signature 07: 0
Problem Signature 08: 2
Problem Signature 09: WrpRepair
Problem Signature 10: 1168
OS version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

Is my laptop dead. Should I order an Apple?? 8)

I've had the blue screen of death. It appears when trying to boot, and then restarts the computer.

Help please!

After recovery disk, it should ask you if you want to recover the system. Did it do that?

Have a look at that Adam

Tried recover, but it said it would override windows...does that not wipe everything?

The recovery system says it "cannot repair"

Tried sfc /scannow in command prompt - failed :(

Override windows does not matter, it won't lose all the programs, just re-does the windows part.

If you want to be really sure you can recover your important files reinstall windows to an external disk and boot from there, copy any files you want to save and then rebuild the main disk .

Will try override windows first... then make my way down the list :D

Cheers guys

Anyone remember Acorn computers - I knew how to work them when I was younger.... not so sure abou this Windows jibber jabber :?

Don't think Dell can do that with the recovery disk.

You can if you have a recovery partition. I had to do just this on my Alienware recently. (Also a dell brand). You can also disable all the extra services etc, if it boots, add half back and so on until you find the one that failed.

Edit - Vista is still s**t though!

Try running chkdsk/f from a dos prompt.
This should scan and fix your c drive.

Says - The type of file system is NTFS (me guess this means goosed?)
Cannot locate current drive

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this colume is dismounted first. All opened handles would then be invalide.

Would I like to force a dismount on this volume?

I have no idea what that means? Would I like to force it ???? :tumbleweed:

pvr - tried to overide Windows to do a repair. If I just hit "Load Vista" will that replace existing OS, or just install windows for a second time?

Stuart - tried booting from last known safe boot, that failed too

MacBook is sounding like a good idea right now....

Can you run chkdsk without the /f as the f is telling it to fix any problems.
Try just running chkdsk on its own

NTFS is just the type of file system on the disk (the other type is FAT)
