Hi all

Looking at visiting the Lake District for a long weekend around May/ June time for approx. 3 nights.
Never been before and know some of you guys live nearby so was hoping you could recommend some good places to stay, visit, avoid, best roads to drive etc.

Any advice appreciated.
 
If you can avoid school holidays its much nicer, Windermere and Bowness are very touristy but can be wonderful when its quieter.
Keswick and the nearby Derwent water is worth a visit - has the shops and also the beautiful lakeside walks. Grasmere is beautiful but again can get very busy.

The A591 from Ambleside to Keswick is a great drive but was closed because of the recent floods - I think its still closed.
 
Go to the Lakes to enjoy the Lakes but be ready to be amongst droves of others who bring the main areas to walking pace in the summer months , Bowness & Windermere easier to access & a nicer drive around the back via Coniston
I would also be enjoying some spirited driving either to or from the Lake district by veering off the M6 through the Trough of Bowland between Preston & Lancaster heading via Clitheroe , Dunsop Bridge & Jubilee Tower & if i was around that day id be happy to wingman you as i did Number5 on his journey north last year :driving:

Thinking about it, going in the week seems a better option and will definitely be avoiding school holidays.

We have been to the lakes many times at different times of the year, but always outside of school holidays. I would say avoid Bowness-On-Windermere. It's a nice enough town, but not what the lakes are about. Our best stay was when we rented a cottage close to Rydal Water.

There are at the moment some bridges out.

It is a lovely place to visit, but it is always busy. I have been there on a dull rainy day and you still get the hoards wondering around the villages in their shorts, sandals and cagoule.
 
As a Cumbrian I'd recommend visiting before Easter if you want less road traffic and tourists but of course the weather could be worse :o
I would get a hotel or B&B on the outskirts of the lakes rather than keswick/Windermere etc it will be cheaper and give you more time to drive the Zed :driving: as for roads to drive just have a look at the passes - Honister,kirkstone and Hardknott :thumbsup:
Edit - I'd also give a thought to the Crooklands Hotel where the National meet is based at, always found it to be very good ! - http://www.crooklands.com/
 
Definitely won't get chance to get their before Easter.
Hopefully the bridges will be back in action soon, imagine those being out of use causes a few traffic issues.
Will look into Crooklands and other suggestions.
