Knocking Meylee HD rear top mounts

I replaced my rear shocks with Bilsteins in November last year and whilst there fitted new Meylee HD top mounts.

Ever since carrying out this task I have had the most annoying knocking/ rattling from the rear end to the point where it is driving me mad. I took it to a local independent to get it on the ramps and nothing obvious was apparent with any under frame bushes etc.

Yesterday I came across the following thread: http://www.bmwforums.info/bmw-3-series-forum/10558-meyle-hd-top-mounts-i-to-3.html

I was carefull when assembling the top mounts and made sure all components were fitted and were fitted in the right orientation. I do now recall that the metal lip at the bottom of the mount sat quite a bit proud of the rubber.

I need to do a trial by removing the shocks and driving very slowly to see if the noise still exists (I guess I could just undo the bottom bolts and let the shocks hang (as long as they do not go too low!). But I am pretty sure that the top mounts are the problem...

I am annoyed because it is such a night mare disassembling the boot to access the top mounts, especially in this cold weather where the plastic is more brittle!

Anyone know how much top mounts from BMW cost? I was thinking either OEM or Lemforder? I assume any E46 top mounts will fit? A number of Ebay sellers suggest that E46 top mounts are not compatible but I didn't think this was the case.

hey speed12 i have the same issue. Installed bilstein B12 kit and used the meyle hd rear top mounts and now have a knocking as you describe.
I assumed that I just hadnt tightened the nut enough so took out all of the boot lining to tighten them but this made no difference.

Glad you posted this thread as i will get some different top mounts now. I might go for the rouge engineering ones as some on here have.
Anyone with rouge engineering mounts had any issues?!

i used the Meylee HD rear top mounts when i installed the rear B4s last year and have had no issue, but im pretty sure i remember something about re using the BMW rubber bits with the raised parts mentioned in that thread, so looks like me and my mechanic accidentally fixed the issue before it happened, you would have thought the Meylee HD would either have matched the design to stop this happening, or at least mention re using the old bits...

Hi Jingle,
I agree but from what I remember there was little installation info wonder if I can get a replacement rubber washer to use instead of having to replace the whole top mount

Hi Adam.

Glad I'm not the only one! It's been driving me nuts, like I said I don't know for sure that it's the meylee mounts but I can't see what else it could be.
I'll look into rogue mounts but they look pricey when in reality oem ones are fine for normal use.

Part of me did wonder about cutting a neat access whole in the boot lining and foam and fitting a call to aid future installs but decided it would look rubbish.

Yea your probably right the rouge top mounts are overkill for road use. Think I will go down the route of the mod that exdos did with the z3 strengthening plate and mybe look at bonding some rubber to the metal part of the meyle top mount

Anyone know whether these will fit the z4?

They look right but the OEM part numbers are different for the z4 and e46 on real OEM.

Did anyone find a solution to this? I've got D2 Racing Coilovers on mine and the knocking noise I get is driving me bonkers. I just stripped out the boot and checked the top mount was tight and it seemed to be but the knocking is still there. Everything else underneath has been checked.

Thanks

Julz
