Knocking coming through steering wheel

Every now and then there is a knocking/clunky feel through the steering wheel. My friend who is a mechanic took my Coupe up on a ramp and said everything looks normal. My brother thinks if may be the bolts on the steering rack that need tightening. I know it's hard to diagnose online but what could this be? Does tightening the bolts on the steering rack sound about right?

Sounds similar to the sounds & feel when i purchased my first Z ( Coupe )
If when stationary you grab each side of a front wheel (slightly but not completely raised off ground helps) & you find movement or even the knocking you describe then front control arms required
From memory around £60 apiece genuine items ?

@Jay-Z4 - did you resolve your steering noise problem?

I encounter similar symptoms (2006 3.0si coupe) in that theres a knock on turning, particularly when reversing but it can be difficult to replicate and more often happens when I'm reversing out of the driveway with the front wheels slightly higher than the rears. I also hear the odd steering / suspension 'clunk' from the front of the car, particularly over speed ramps or when entering an underground car park. I had the front anti-roll bar bushes and drop links changed a couple of months ago (they were noticeably worn) but the knocking is still apparent.

At this point, I'm thinking front control arm bushes or loose bolts on the steering rack, I'm curious to hear from others who have solved such an issue. I can use a set of spanners to reasonable affect, any advise on some 'driveway diagnosis' would be welcome.

Also depends what droplinks were used if they've been replaced, which is likely.

I bought and fitted some cheap ebay ones that lasted a year before they were completely buggered. Replaced them with meyle hd parts which are much better.
