Kerbed my alloy

Anyone know of a good place in Lancashire (nr Preston) where I can get this refurbed.

It's one of my pet-hates seeing kerbed alloys on a car and I was fuming when i realised i'd done it. It's one of the lovely 19" 326 style ones too!! I just need to get it sorted out ASAP to make myself feel better so if anyone can assist, please let me know.

Thanks

I wouldnt use BMW they don't strip the wheel first they rub it down and powder coat over the top, leaving overspray. Always a shoddy job. Made an awful job of my 224s.

Best place to go is Lepsons, but there is the wheel specialist in Manchester who are supposed to be quite good. Colour matching might be difficult for one wheel tho.

For what it's worth I've used the Wheel Specialist down south, and they were very good and the colour match for one wheel was good enough. (I have almost new 326M's and hit one early on) They are franchises though, so the quality may differ slightly but I believe their colour choice is the same from one to the next.

Ye I went to the one in Newcastle and they were hit and miss. But they might look ok, but don't expect it to be perfect as the factory finish is better than the best powder coated refurb IMO.

Lepsons is the best and you can send them via currier but they are miles away.

But a BMW Aprroved bodyshop isnt actually BMW...its an independent bodyshop that is approved to repair BMW's to standard.

Or are you saying avoid general bodyshops and use a wheel specialist instead?

I hear what you say Tom but the fella in this neck o' the woods makes them look as good as new! My daughter rattled the spokes of two wheels on her car off a high kerb and its impossible to see the repair!
So it can be done, it depends on the skill of the repairer I suppose!

It depends on the body shop. Many body shops do not have full wheel refurb facilities and instead rub down and respray, because it is quite a complex and specific job in itself. Whereas a wheel specialist will dip the wheel in acid to remove the old paint and lacquer usually for 24 hours. Then they will fill, weld, heat treat or rub down the area to bring it flush with the alloy, then they are bead blasted to create the best surface, then put through an oven to remove all trapped air before priming. Then they will be primed, put into another oven, then either powder coated or sprayed and lacquered.

A specialist wheel service will be the same price as a body shop but the process is much more specialised and QC is higher as its the only output product.

I see what your saying but depends how anal you are, had mine done at the wheel specialist and had them done again because I wasn't happy with how they had finished them. With a careful eye you can definitely tell the difference, you can usually feel the difference too with overspray. Then there is the problem with lacquer overlap, the wheel is much more likely to corrode when rubbed down painted over lacquer instead of being done properly, which happened to my old car, the previous owner had a cheap smart repair done and the paint came off due to corrosion because the paint doesn't adhere to the surface in the same way so it might be cheaper but in the long run you'll have to have it done again.

Wow....didnt realise about all of that! I can see the difference now.

Heres the link to how Lepsons refurb their wheels (arguably the best in the UK)

Cheers guys - think I may just wait until I kerb them all and get them done all at once in that case!

I don't fancy mis-matched colours on the wheels.

Mr Wilkes gets a lot of wheels refurbished and he is in Lancashire (Pendle area) you might want to pm him to see who he uses...

There really is no point in a smart repair on a wheel. The cost is around the same as a proper refurb. Lepsons are good, but find a local wheel company and take a look at their work. If they are any good they will have lots of customer wheels on site you can look at.

I used a local company (Crawley) £120 cheaper than Lepsons for all four and they use exactly the same process. Saw the wheels half way through the process after they had been bead blasted. Very pleased with the result.

Hi there, I bought my Z4 from Hippo Prestige in Burnley and they did a cracking job on one of the wheels which was kerbed. Hope this helps.
