K&N filter and MAF cleaner

Thought I would try a K&N filter and clean the mass airflow sensor with cleaner on my 23i.
Has made a difference in that I don't need to be so conscious to give some extra welly to pull away in Normal mode and all round seems smoother on acceleration.
Quite happy with the result.

Any long term downside to K&N's, have read a few things that initially put me off.
 
Fine no problems.
Well constructed.
Came already soaked in oil.
Had read that the oil can get on the maf sensor, so might clean every say 5k just to make sure there's no problems.
 
What's the procedure on cleaning the maf? I've no idea where it is (not looked) but have had a very sensitive erratic throttle for ages and want to give the maf a clean in case that's the issue..
 
Well on the 23i pop out the air filter and downstream is positioned the MAF sensor wire.
Apparently it looks like the type that heats up, so oil could bake on the fine wire sensor.
