Just test drove a near identical car to mine

A week or two ago I went on autotrader to see how Z4 prices were doing, particularly 3.0si. Nothing white, blue and manual with the si badge came up, but something else did that caught my eye.

It was a 2003 maldives blue 3.0 Z4 with 25,000 less miles on it than my 2003 maldives blue 2.5 Z4. It was at the same Carmax I bought my Z4 at two years ago. I thought about it, and decided it would be silly to do it. But the car kept nagging at me. So tonight I went to drive it.

It was pretty funny when I got there and told the guy that I wanted to drive the 2003 blue Z4 and get an appraisal for my identical car

So while they were playing around with my car, I played around with theirs. The only differences between the two cars was that this one had the 3.0 (6sp woot), black interior/top, aluminum trim, and no sports package (:/) The top also made noise, which was disconcerning.

I took it for a spin. And wow. The power difference is really impressive. I liked the car, but I just didn't know if I liked it enough to give up sports package, to deal with the cold aluminum trim, and take on more debt. I also realized that I didn't like the black leather as much in the car as my tan. I think there is way too much tan in my car, but this was just way too much black.

What everything hinged most on was what they wanted to give me on my car.

After I took it back we went in to see what they had to say about my car. They only had good things to say about my car. Nothing wrong with it, well maintained, etc etc etc. Btw, we'll only give you 10,000 for me. I knew I was going to take a hit on it. Come on, the economy, November, vert. I knew it was going to happen, just not that much. I thanked them for their time and left.

And at that point I realized that I still have all of my track stuff in my car. My "track" wheels are on it, I have an 18 inch type 2 in the trunk, a helmet, a jack, etc etc etc. I wonder what the guys thought when they saw that

On the way home though, I realized how much I like my car. All 184 hp of it.

Cliffs: test drove a near identical car to mine, but at the end of the day, drove home in what I came in, and am very happy that I did.

I have always been careful to not leave hints about my past car's track duties laying around whenever an appraiser is going to be giving it a once over. For as much fun as I have had out on the track in my past 4 cars its hard to overlook how hard those miles are on the car relative to street driving. Most of my fellow track junkies seem to agree that 100 miles of track driving is the equivalent of several thousand miles worth of street driving and then some.

I have always made a ritual of a full top to bottom detail job that includes the engine bay and undercarriage in an effort to make the car look like it's never done much beyond grocery trips and Sunday school transportation on the day it goes in for appraisal. If I was an appraiser and I saw the helmet in the trunk the price for your car would drop by several thousand on the spot.

Happily this wasn't the "real deal" where you were completely serious about getting top dollar for your olde steed :D

Yeah, I wasn't too serious about it. If they offered me 4 or 5 grand more maybe, but I don't think it was the right Z4 to trade for. The interior and lack of sports package would get to me.

Yup - for me the interior is everything. That's the part I see all the time when I am driving the car so that's the part I have to love or else the driving experience will always be flawed.
