Just picked up my first Z4 - Question re exhaust

Hi all. I have just got my 2003 3.0 SMG Z4 today and what a fantastic car (and cheap! These things have taken a hit, to my advantage 8) )

Quick question, I NEED some kind of exhaust system on it to give it a better sound. I used to have an E46 M3 which sounded really raspy, is there any aftermarket exhaust which I should be parting with some more cash on???

Yeah, re the Milltek, I see there's various systems for sale with some scary prices attached. I need to be realistic. The car was £6.5k.....I REALLY shouldn't be spending more than £500 on an exhaust, it just isn't cost effective to spend £1000 on something which the whole car is only worth 6 times that.

So any cheaper alternatives which don't drone at low revs??

Pics will follow! But here's the link from ebay! She's still for sale apparently! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280923893...AX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_599wt_1220

Did I get a good deal?

Not a fan of the alpina badging... But why does the last pic have a black headlight inner, and the other pic show a silver (correct) headlight inner?

I hope they match!!

But aside from that it looks lovely!!

I got custom quad exhaust on mine... But isnt at all loud, infact it is quieter then my oem one!!!

Looks nice! I'd be removing the Alpina badges sharpish before someone on here lynches you though... :D

And yes, I agree - looking at the eBay photos... do the headlamps match?

Looks nice and a good price.

Need to get rid of those badges tho certainly not suitable! Like non M cars with M badges all over them. Would look nice with an M5 SMG gear knob too!

Welcome Maggo.

Amazing condition for the age. And those 108s look brand new! Ditch the ALPINA badging and you'll be set.

Exhaust wise have you thought about a bypass system? Uber cheap but uber effective. Few on here have done it on various models.

Cheers guys, I'm definitely going to look at that exhaust bypass! Sounds great for that price! Does is affect the emissions at all for MOT?

The headlamps do match, I guess it was the angle of the picture was taken from.

One other question, the SMG paddles. At the moment, although there are 2 paddles, they both do the same (i.e. push and pull). Is there a setting/modification so that the left one changes down and the right one changes up (like my old M3)?

Thanks again!

Aaah, you've bought THAT one :? Looks nice, BUT...

We're quite aware of this Busted ALPINA. To stop us sniggering, you need to ditch those badges. Bad choice by the previous owner as the chrome boot one is cheap aftermarket tat, and I'd guess the wheel and steering boss badges are too...and they'll turn a lovely shade of orange in no time. The boot roundel, too....bad enough to have fakes on a genuine ALPINA, never mind a non-ALPINA

If you wanted a nice raspy exhaust sound, you should have bought a genuine ALPINA :driving:

Shouldnt affect emmisions although im sure if it does somebody here thats done it will let you know. Or PM one of the guys from the link. Not sure on the paddles. Doesnt sound like a mod or setting you can do. Could you not just always use the left one to change down and always use the right one to change up instead; save yourself some sterlings!

Re the Paddles, it's the pushing to change down the gear which I want to change (i.e. pull the left paddle to go down, pull the right one to change up) so I might have a play to see if there's any microswitches in there which can be swapped around.

Re the 'Sound Generator' foam, it looks like a good trick, I'll try tomorrow and report back! Might get some proper pictures tomorrow too when I've removed the Alpina badging!

Ah, I see. Probably worth a play then.
Sound generator foam removal is a great easy mod to do. Makes it sound louder in the cabin anyway
Glad to hear you picked up the subtle messaging re: those Alpina badges too; almost as bad as putting an ///M badge on. Almost.

Well, I've took out the foam from the 'Noise Generator' and it's certainly made a difference inside the cabin, but not too sure outside! I think the new back box is on the shopping list!

Also, does anyone else have the problem of the hazard lights being switched on every time the handbrake is released! It's doing my head in......every time!
