Is this the sound generator??!
Hope so - always thought the car sounded good but thought it was standard

Yes that's the sound generator. You can still take out the foam from the rubber sound delivery pipe leading into the cabin. That will make it sound more RAW.

I presume simple job to remove the foam or does the whole lot need to come out?

The pipe just pulls off at both ends. The small piece of foam is at the airbox end and the larger piece at the bulkhead end.

I agree, sounds great but only temp for a sunday blast or something, gets annoying otherwise.

Shame its notm louder outside the car for tunnels etc, the 3.0 is a nice sounding engine but I actually REALLY miss the sound of my old 5 pot 20vt FC, in a tunnel it sounded amazing.
A mate still has one and everytime he drives off I think 'wow that sounds so good'.

Need to get someone to do me a flyby in the Z to see what it sounds like, not great I imagine. Not a huge fan of BMW noise, have heard M3's on full chat and never been impressed, sounds much better inside the car.

The V8 m3 is a differen story though :D

I'm going to take the foam out of mine when i get a spare minute

You can take the foam out of mine too  not that theres much left in it with the ride in the Z.

Sound generator? why not just do it properly and fit a big xhaust to it? then it should make plenty of noise.

Oh and whats with all the M snobbery?

I want my Zed to sound like what the BMW engineers designed. If I wanted a car that sounded like a V8, or what ever, I would have bought one. I like how my Zed sounds so I am happy with it. However with what our government is planning in the future with all the crap and tax stuff we are all going to driver cars that sound like WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Or no sound at all that would probably be sound environment polluting. :x

Personally I thought the 3.0 sounded fairly average at 0-3000rpm or so until I removed 75% of the bulkhead foam.

All of it out IS too much, but at around 1/2 > 3/4 removed it starts getting louder and better, and by 75% it's, imho, perfect.

Roof down makes it less intense.

No louder outside, which is kinda a good thing I guess... but I think the car deserves a bit more exhaust noise... just begging to hear that overrun ruffle and pop going on :D

MkV R32 and TVR sixes sound so much better, the M54 really is overly silenced imho, for a sports car.

I'm tempted to test some more with foam. Ie, fatter but with a hole cored out, different desities etc, see what happens :) Might be able to just get the good bits and keep out the 3000rpm resonance that *can* get a tad too much sometimes.

Dave

I've now driven with all the foam out and roof up and I would agree it is too loud! My ears were ringing (like they do after going clubbing) and that was a 30 min journey down the A road. Any longer and my ears would have started to bleed.

I am going to mess around with the foam this weekend to get the right amount in. The thing is it sounds fantastic with the roof down but way too loud with the roof up therefore a balance must be struck.

@WaZZZZman: soundgenerator is a part developed by BMW therefore it gives you sound as BMW engineers designed it.

so I have a 2.5 which by default doesn't come with a sound generator. I ordered the parts and followed the instructions off a forum - not difficult.

A bit late, but...
COuld you list the parts here, with the BMW reference number ?
Thanks.

i find my fuel consumption goes up with the foam out... must be due to the urge for the sound...

power gain = 0
hoon factor = 100%

my rant about gruppe M... sounds good... car is slower

I 'fine tuned' the sound by removing all the foam and adding some back untill i was happy with the sound i can only hear it above 3k or at WOT (wide open throttle) which is how i like it, the problem is IMO when you remove all or most of it you can hear the engine 'labouring' when pushing a tall gear, all noise and no go unless you change down or wait for the revs to pick up. I had my mate take it for a drive up the road, there is a fair bit of induction noise form the 3.0i but removing the foam doesn't seem to make much difference to the noise outside the car, well not with the roof up anyway. I had a play around with the noise generator because my last car, an E36 M3 had a DaveF induction kit and Scorpion exhaust which was loud inside and out lol I had hoped for a simlilar thing from the Zed but the big difference is the M3 would pull in any gear where the Zed 'bogs' down (even in sport mode) when flooring it in a tall gear. On reflection i'd say removing some is the way to go, after all the Zed is a classy car, you don't want too much noise :D
