Just has some fun with an M3

There's a guy who works in the same industrial park as me but for a different company. He drives an e46 m3 - Almost every day we get out of work at a similar time and always catch each other entering the bypass roundabout nearby. We then hound it up the dual carriageway together, and my perky little 2.2 does well to keep up (don't get me wrong he tears away in the straights...)

Never met him, don't know his name, where he lives, which office block he comes from or anything like that but we have a crackin' laugh and he always waves when we part. I wave back of course.

The difference or lack thereof is true to an extent but some of the turbo 4wd machinery available today is unbelievable. I have an M3 and it really struggles to put the power down in this weather, a friend has a GTR and the traction coupled with the torque is just obscene. I agree in average conditions the difference between a Z4 and M3 is negligible.

I've always thought BMW are great everyday/fun compromise cars, M3 is the best example. High revving engine, RWD, LSD etc but I'm certainly starting to get drawn into the darkside of 4wd and turbo. To me being catapulted towards the horizon rain or shine seems more fun than feathering the throttle, TC flashing or sideways into a hedge (I am no driving god) in a BMW.

I came from an E46 M3 to a 3.0SI and no offence but an E46 M3 will destroy a 3.0SI nevermind a 2.2 :D

If your car is setup nicely it might have an advantage in the corners as the M3 can be sloppy if poorly maintained (bushes, shocks old etc)

The days of massive difference are over though, 20 years ago the difference between performance cars and standard cars was huge, nowadays any diesel or small hatch can keep up.

Totally agree, new 320d's are no slugs :o I don't know if it was modded but 0-60 was not much slower than mine! In the real world a second is not that much different 0-60  still not getting anymore diesels again though unless I start doing 50k miles a year.
