Regarding the MR2, it probably is an evolution. Where do you go next if you like 2 seater sports cars, it has to be quicker and there are 2 routes you can go, the Z4/Boxster/S2000 route which are all quicker, better equiped and at least as good handling. The Boxster is quite a jump in running costs, the S2000 feels inside like just a better MR2 but not that much better and the Z4 is somewhere in the middle. Far better spec'd, very good looking, quicker and just a better car. The other direction is going lightweight and getting a VX220 or Elise. Both of which are brilliant cars but pretty sparse for day to day running.
The less said about the SLK the better
The MR2 was a quality car and very cheap to run, whilst being quicker than average with very good handling. There is also something cool about having the engine just behind your head and at ear height. Plus imo, I think an unmolested MK2 is one of the coolest looking cars ever, very Japanese but in this case that's not a bad thing. I'm glad my Dad has got my old one to keep it in the family.
