Jump Starting a Battery

Yesterday my cadillac (2004 SRX AWD 6 cyl 42k mi) wouldnt start. The info screen said " 11.2 VOLTS BATTERY OK". i guess OK in GM terms means the same as "poor" and "bad".

So i called my father and he came over with the truck and jumper cables. i proceded to hook up the batteries pos to pos and neg to neg. Then he told me to disconnect the neg jumper cable from the cadillac battery and put it on a ground somewhere in the engine bay.

This came a total "shock" to me because ive been jumping batteries many times before and i always hooked the cables directly up to the batteries. I just read about.com's "how to jump a battery" post and it confirmed what my father said.

Am i just a lucky guy and needs to go out right now and buy a lottery ticket because i wasnt blown up a long time ago?

Now am i right ass u me(ing) hooking up battery to battery with cables pos to pos neg to neg may cause an explosion?

* Disclaimer* I love my Z4 better caddy is for the winter and picking up fat chicks hahah

Wow, first I've ever heard that, it's always been post to post where I come from. Don't cross them though. Pos to pos neg to neg.

Probably the neatest thing I saw, was one guy disconnected his battery, put it in the dead trucks spot, started the truck then disconnected his battery and put back in his truck an drove off.
