John Lewis Carpets

Hi all,

Has anyone used or considered John Lewis for carpets/fitting? Looking to get the living room, hall and extension done over the summer. Went to a local firm yesterday but they weren't particularly helpful as I'm pretty clueless where carpets are concerned, underlay etc. I know JL will be more expensive but the actual price of the carpets seems no more than your local firms so guessing its the fitting and level of service you're paying for.

If you don't know your Wilton from your Axminster then why not JL Tim, they'll have contract fitters but these 'should' be decent guys and it's all carpet fitters do so should'nt be any problems, but if there Is then JL aren't Arfur Daley. One point Tim is don't scrimp on your underlay, good quality stuff can be getting up to the price of the carpet but it's worth it, cheap crap underlay goes flat in no time and you'll regret it. Do it right the first time and it and the carpet will last. Take your time to go through options and cost, the variety is vast. IIRC good quality carpet starts from approx £20 per metre, personally I doubt it's worth going under that for longevity, but it's been a while since I had anything to do with carpet so I might be way out, just take your time and do your research.

JL are usually hassle free with good back up, worth paying for IMO. :thumbsup:
 
Tim my advise buy wool.
There is a lot of polypropylene saxonies in the market at the moment a good mugs handful but appearance retention is poor with these fibres. Wool will give better long term appearance retention.
It's not about how they'll wear as you be unlucky to wear any threadbare before you get bored it's how they'll look in 5 years time.

If it's cut pile minimum 2 ply, loop pile 3 ply yarn.
As above don't cut back on the underlay you wouldn't fit remould tyres on your car so, Buy the best you can afford.
They will probably be having promotions for the bank holiday in 2 weeks.

Buy cheap buy twice :thumbsup:

Thanks for the replies. appreciate it, been having a gander on the JL website and looking around 30 quid a square metre for a wool carpet which I was expecting a little more, nylon is actually more expensive depending on the weight. Will keep in mind over the underlay although no prices on the JL website. Current carpet has been down 24 years and still looks decent although had it professionally cleaned a few years back. I honestly can't remember what I did back then, just remember taking the old carpet up and ordering the new carpet at a local warehouse and they came and ftted it. Feeling a little lazier this time and just wanted the whole service routine, taking old up and moving furniture around which JL do, just you pay more for it.
