Jacking up car & movement

The good lady got me a trolley Jack & stands for my birthday, so thought I'd go about checking my drain holes today. Never jacked a car up before & frankly, whimped out!

I tried two times, once at the front wheel Jack point to then pop the stand at the rear Jack point, and then from the rear centre to put the stands at both sides. Was amazed at how much the trolley Jack seemed to twitch & move when raising the car.

Moved it down off the slight slope of the drive and onto the road, but the same movement seemed to happen. In both scenarios the wheels remaining on the floor were chocked, but just didn't have any confidence the car wouldn't cause the trolley to slip & drop onto the Jack.

Am I just being a wuss & need to man up? Or doing something wrong? All I could imagine is the state of my arm if it dropped off the stands, despite having sleepers under the wheels just in case.

Of course it will move as the car goes up in an arc and the jack will go in an opposite arc. The key is to ensure the wheels under the jack can move otherwise you will run into problems.

If you have no confidence of your trolley Jack use axle stands once lifted high enough. Axle stands are cheap to buy from Halfords

when i jscked mine up a couple of weeks ago the trolley jack was on cobbles and so could not move - now that is very scarey, the jack as to move and thats why its on wheels

Man up , we used to jack a car up and drag it around on the trolley jack to move it out of the way , health and safety would have a fit these days but I'm still breathing

Funny as I was thinking the same. Didn't finish a complete rear end brake pipe replacement yesterday so too the axle stands out and pushed the car backwards fully into the garage on the trolley jack. Ok it's a 3 tome pro type but no problem.

To OP the only thing to ensure is never jack up on aa slope, the jack is free to roll remaking on all its wheels and you put stands under before working on car. Then you're safe.
