I've got rusty nuts!

Hello,

Only got the car yesterday but all wheelnuts/studs and hubs are rusty. The front calipers have surface corrosion too. As it has the 19 wheels, it all shows up like a sore thumb. The car is very low mileage, so I think it has been sitting outside for long periods.

Anyone know of the best way to paint them without the paint coming off as soon as a socket is put on them?

I presume they would have been silver??

It's also got rusty hubs but I think I have a solution to those. Smooth black Hammerite. :!:

I just put a thin smear of copper grease on mine and then fitted some of these

Brilliant idea! Thanks. I wonder if they do them for brake calipers (although they might melt)?

Did they fit over the locking stud?

Pondrew, some pictures of the rest of the car would be good😀, I would get those locking nuts off and give them a soaking in release oil or similar and see what they look like after to see if they are still okay to use. When I first got my Zed I used hammerite to spruce up the calipers and discs

I thought calipers get hot and had to be painted in heat proof paint.

I’ve used hammerite for calipers/discs with no ill effects, wheel bolts are originally black and I’ve used aerosol bbq paint on those with good results

This get better and better. I have a 2.5L tin of black hammerite and tons of stove paint. I may get the push over caps aswell though to hopefully protect them once done! Thanks guys.

I would get rid of the locking nuts also, more hassle than they are worth and especially in that condition

:o How the hell did they get like that my 04 is still running on the wheel bolts it left the factory with and they look like new.

Another vote for hammerite on the calipers i used smooth silver and its not flaked or chipped been on there a good few years as for the hubs i used a spray on manifold paint and again still looks good.

Re the wheel bolts i would bin the lot and get a new set.

I don't know but I have a couple of theories:

It has only 25k mileage and is almost 8 years old. The rest of the car (apart from a very few stone chips on the front plastic and some slight damage on the bottom OS of the front bumper) is immaculate. The wheels themselves are really clean other than some minor kerbing on the outer edges (top of the list to sort).

Either the previous owner used some really acidic wheel cleaner and didn't rinse it off properly,

OR

It has been taken out on salted roads and then put away for long periods without being cleaned.

The centre caps are also corroded on the outer edges, so I reckon the second scenario is most likely. All four wheels are the same and the hubs have a lot of surface rust. The calipers have lots of surface corrosion aswell. It notices so much more because of the massive gaps in the big wheels.

I just hope the underside is OK (haven't had chance to check yet) if salt is the cause.

Get new set of bolts don't cost much and for a tenner get some bolt covers. I use the smoked black.
That car looks like it's lived near the sea side or in the sea!
In that state i would probably replace the pads when the calipers are off.

Nice new set of silver bolts you need, as others have said get those locking bolts gone before they break on you on removal one day and cause a shitload of grief as well as lightening your wallet, set of these covers all bases and look rather nice once fitted too

I bought a set in 2019, but they weren't a very tight fit and I could see them falling off so I didn't use them in the end.

Not sure if E89 bolts are the same as E86, but E86 needs 17mm covers.

Not sure why anyone would pay 9 quid for cheap covers when you can replace with nice shiny new steel bolts for a few quid more :scratchhead:
