It stopped raining so we headed for the quayside

So sick of seeing the Zed under a sodden half cover we decided that we'd head out if the rain stopped, which it did Sunday afternoon. The sun was low so we stayed close to home and headed for the quayside. Fun to squirt the Zed between a few roundabouts on the way and although cold, it was great to be out with the roof down again. Couldn't resist taking a few photos (as usual  ) but not very good photos - we didn't take the camera so just used the phone. Thought you might to see them (especially if you've never been to Newcastle).

The redevelopment at the quayside is stunning - you can see the multiple bridges (including the Millenium bridge) and the old Baltic Flour Mill is now an arts gallery and the silver domes behind it is the Sage - multiple music venue.

On the Newcastle side (right of this photo) used to be scrap yards and warehouses - it's been developed for Business, hotels, restaurants and residential use - there's also the courts. It's a lovely place to walk along now and is part of a national cycle route, coast to coast.

That's the high level bridge - trains run across the top and the lower section is for traffic (and was a location in the 'Get Carter' film). Newcastle Castle Keep on the right (where the city get's it's name from) and the swing bridge in the foreground.

Great view from the control room of the swing bridge no doubt (great views of the Tyne Bridge from here but they were out of focus! )

Some classic architecture in Newcastle City - here's the Railway station entrance.

St James's Park (a very different feel to this part of the city - the surrounding high rises are colourful, impressive and modern)

A very different city to the Newcastle I first arrived at in 1975!

Great pics!
Who needs a camera when phones take pics this good..? (Or, perhaps the car is just photogenic)

Nice seeing your Z in city pics with some nice shots taken ,
You paint a rosy picture of the city , you should work for the tourism board :)
My first time in Newcastle last Saturday to collect a van , arriving by train then a 15min taxi ride out of the city can't say i would rush back :o although it was drizzling & grey which probably didn,t help :?

I recognise all the places in your pics, nice to hear some of the history. My son works in Newcastle (lives about 5 mins from Metro Centre) so been over quite a few times
Some great nights out in town

We bought a Panasonic camera which has 5 axis stability control for use in the Zed and we left that at home :( It's a big help when you're taking photos on the move. The phone camera created many blurred images sadly.

Nice to see a Zed out and about in this rotten spell of wet stuff.

We were getting sick of not getting out in the Zed so dashed out when the rain stopped :D

Depends where you were heading mr wilks - like any other city it has it's rough parts. However the centre and quayside have been considerably developed in the years I've been here and is impressive.
Don't get me started on how Newcastle is a brilliant compact city with excellent communications (main rail line, motorways, airport, metro), shopping (Eldon Square, Metro Centre and much cheaper options across a relatively small area), but most of all it's the space and ability to travel 3 miles out of the city to fabulously varied countryside: Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland and the Scottish borders, wonderful Northumberland coastline, an hour and half to the Lakes, less than a half hour to North Pennines . . . . . problem is more and more folk are visiting and spoiling the summer driving (sometimes you have to go to the trouble of overtaking the traffic you come across :o )

Hope he takes you to the Northumberland coast  Newcastle is one of the top choices for students due to nightlife as well

Nice pics, good bit of defensive Z parking there.

Ha, like all other Zed owners we have a deep understanding of defensive parking  This is a massive free carpark next to a lovely café called the Bike Hut. It's on the coast to coast cycle route and caters for those travellers with cycle hire and fixing, toilets and information. We often call for breakfast as it has a great bacon sandwich, coffee, seating outside and impressive views.

I am sure I visited there a few times in a previous job. I seem to remember being taken to a Chinese area and then on to a selection of real ale pubs in the vicinity. Would that be correct.

Yep - you can walk out the railway station and across two roads into the Chinese sector and then there are lots of traditional pubs that start at the other end of the 'chinese' road

Yeah been to Tynmouth and up to Alnwick castle
Had some really good meals out in the town centre and Quayside.
Very friendly city - even if a guy in a pub once asked me (lightheartedly) if I was a Mackem!
I said what with an accent like this (Cumbrian :D )

Great photos Paul. Nice to see you out already this year. Looks like you had some wax for Christmas too !

I'm looking forward to seeing 'the bear' out on one of your hoons this summer

Magic - but do try and head further north to Craster, Embleton Beach, Dunstanburgh Castle, Low Newton by the Sea, and you must see Bamburgh Castle and there's more! Take a look at our 'Northumberland Castle and Coast Runs' held for the last two years up here - lots of photos on the Runs/Meets/Road Trip section of the forum.

Always enjoy your 'run out' posts Paul.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks John, bit different to our normal runs out though we do go to the café on the Quayside quite often - massive free carpark and outside seating.

We've been out already this year but been frustrated by this poor weather and so much rain! Hope to be out with PorthoZ and maybe Cherrym tomorrow - looks like a window in the weather - we shall see

Cheers for the info, much appreciated. I will certainly look into that for the 'summer' trips - beats wandering around Eldon Sq :D
