Issues since fitting Eibach's

As it says above really. Some random creaking noises from the front when steering at low speeds and strange steering feeling at high speed.

Had the struts off and refitted, changed lollipops so I'm now scratching my head as not sure what the noise could be.

Booked in for hunter alignment tomorrow so I'm hoping that will sort the vague steering.

I've chatted with mates who seem to think the creaking noises could be top mounts or track rod ends?

Has anyone else experience'd anything similar after changing their spring?

Thanks in advance.
Adam.

Had the creaking sound on my focus st after fitting eibachs. The top mount came apart and the ball bearings inside fell out. Bodged it back up and chucked it all back on the car.

Sold it eventually so i'm not sure if that was the issue, but it would make sense as the car was fine (and brand new) before that incident.

Hi Adam, I fitted Eibachs on my old 3.0i. I had some bad knocking sounds when going over bumps etc.

This may seem obvious to you but the problem with mine was that the springs weren't sitting right in the shocks. I had thought that the bottom end of the bottom coil of the spring should sit against the rubber cut stop thing. It should and the end of the spring should be a couple of inches away from that. If you look at the shock form the top it isn't circular its oval and so is the spring so match up the shapes and put it on like that.

Apologies for this if it is teaching you to suck eggs but I had this issue and thought it was worth explaining.

Thanks for the advice both. Will double check the spring and whip the top mounts off. It's not a major issue but it is really annoying at low speeds. I can't stand niggling noises, they give me sleepless nights! Ha

Thanks again, Adam.

The other thing is the firewall strut braces. The two forming the V in the engine bay. The nuts come a bit loose and the struts can move, especially when you do something that changes the way the chassis moves, like lowering. My last car was lowered and has the same problem, nipping the brace nuts up solved it. Do not over-tighten them though - there is a torque setting but I can't remember it right now.

Thanks Bing, will give that a try tomorrow. I had the Hunter alignment done today and it has transformed the car. The toe on both the front wheels was out massively and pretty much everything else needed adjusting. I can't believe the difference it has made. I just need to cure these low speed creaks and knocks and I'll be a happy man.

A guy having his 911 tracked at the garage today was all over my Zed, he loved it. Needles to say that gave me a nice warm feeling inside! Ha

I would always advise changing the top mounts when changing over springs etc. if yours are original they will be on the way out anyway and new springs/lower suspension will only make them worse.

The BMW mounts are not the best owing to how they are designed and the bearings quickly wear out and grind a bit, which you can feel and hear.

I have also see in the past some people not put them back together properly when refitting, the are small washers that go around them which need to be in place to prevent noises.

If you have a look at the toe on the front you will see little crosses. That means the adjustment was off the scale!

Hi Adam83, after reading this its given me food for thought, i'm just waiting on new Eibachs to arrive, never struck me to replace the Top mounts.
Where did you buy and what did you replace them with ?

Cheers,

Paul

I asked my local garage to fit oem items. I've never changed them in the past when lowering cars but they have done the trick :-)
