I test drove an E89 3.5iS. Nice enough that I put in an offer, but I doubt they'll bite

On the creature comforts side, I'd like a better speaker/amp setup. I've only got the basic 6 speaker install. I'd think about swapping the head unit for a facelift one to get the twin tuner so TMC works properly.
I think my head unit must be the later version because it plays MP3 CDs - don't know if it was swapped under warranty or if it's original equipment as, from what I can find out, the new versions tricked into production during 2005

No, the MP3 capability came in April 2004 so yours would play MP3 on a 55 plate.

Was yours build by BMW before April though? The Alpina was taken from a standard 3.0 and then converted by Alpina so there may be a delay in part changes (i.e. your car might be 6 months or so older).

Yes, it has a build date under the bonnet. I think it is September 2004. I don't know if that date is the US build date or the Buchloe build date though

According to the data I have on #69, it was first registered in Sept 2004, BMW assembly date, inferred from other models, will be between Oct 2003 and March 2004 - but should be closer to the March builds as, from the data I have, #41 was Oct 2003 and #74 was March 2004

My mistake then, I originally checked it out when I was looking at E46 M3s, where the info was that the first MP3 compatable head units started to trickle into the production run in September 2004 but were in short supply because of quality control issues and didn't start being installed into the majority of cars until sometime in 2005 and assumed that it would apply to the E85 as well
