Olympic judo: 34st 5lbs Ricardo Blas Jr wins battle of judo giants

Heavyweight Guam judoka Ricardo Blas Jr, who weighs 34st 5lbs, is through to the last 16 of the men's Olympic +100kg judo.

Blas Jr is more than 10 stone heavier than any other athlete in the Olympics - and 6st 10lbs heavier than the entire Japan women's gymnastics team.

He beat Facinet Keita of Guinnea, who weighs 21 stones

That's ridiculous, I'm surprised that's not a health and safety risk - if he falls on you, that's lights out!
 
At lease in boxing and other martial arts speed and ability are really important. Physical size helps but fitness negates excessive weight, Judo is about technique and using your opponents momentum against them but that is pretty pointless against 35 st of lard that just stands there.

Judo translates to the gentle way but i know that in modern judo at lot is down to just beef and power. I have seen people get their 1st Dan and their judo is rubbish

Sadly to win at sport many people seem to be very oddball shapes to gain that extra advantage. I was watching one of the womens Volleyball teams and they looked genetically modified. All had armpits above the top of the male coach's head. :o

I stopped when I got too tall (Hit 6' at 12) Switched to Taekwondo and loved it. Thinking about trying something different now.
