Is the Z4MR right for me?

Hey guys,

I recently got married and my wife and I are looking at a bigger house to start a family. Now this of course has a direct impact in my performace car hobby!

I currently have a Mk1 2000 TVR Tuscan which is not the cheapest thing to run due to the high maintance the engine requires.

After seeing the recent prices of Z4M's I have started to be tempted by them, plus they have the added bonus of having BMW's reliability and build quality which is lets be honest a lot better than TVR's.

My current fears of this move is first off the driving experience, the Tuscan currently puts out 360bhp per ton with no driving aids at all making it a real rollercoaster ride. Is it possible to have the same sensation with the Z4M or do the electrics get in the way of tail out fun?

My other worry is the running costs, am I likley to be any better off? I plan to do most of the servicing myself so it will just be costs of parts and any issues I can't resolve. My average service cost is £600 for the Tuscan.

Any advice would be great

Cheers

Dave

Wow that sounds good I kept hearing people saying that the inspection 1 & 2 services were done inbetween oil services.

For example Oil -> inspection 1 -> Oil -> inspection 2.

As for the millage, I have averaged 2500 miles a year so far in the tuscan (only comes out when its Sunny)

The sequence you have said is correct with maximum time of 2 years between each.

I picked mine up last month with 35k on and had inspec 1 done in march, so no servicing till march 13 (oil) then inspec 2 march 15.

Cheap as chips.

Insurance only £387 as second car policy

oh I see!

Thats is even better! The current service schedule for the TVR is every 12 months or 6k miles with a big service every 24 months or 12k miles. Means it gets rather pricey.

Silly question but how is the head made up on the 3.2 lump, I take it the tappets are shimed, is it just your normal over head cams or does it use finger followers?

Re service costs, you're looking at roughly the following, in order. Prices below are main dealer prices, and can get about 40-50% off those prices by using an Indy.

Oil Service - £200 (every 2 years or roughly 15,000 miles)
Inspection 1 - £600 (every 2 years or roughly 15,000 miles)
Oil Service - £200 (every 2 years or roughly 15,000 miles)
Inspection 2 - £800 (every 2 years or roughly 15,000 miles)

(Repeat)

Daston,

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the marriage

Always been tempted with a TVR but the reliability issues have put me off. Think the Zed MR will give you a more sedate ride than the TVR and perhaps more practical in terms of reliability.
