Is the 2.5 really so gutless?

Not sure if it was the car I was driving or not but it didn't have much theottle response. I had the 3.0 that threw you backwards and I've just sold my mini cooper s that chucked you back and that's 170. I was expecting more from 218. I tried normal driving and o tried reving to 6k fear changes. Is there a power band or am I anretard?

Definitely not gutless. My 2.5 pulled more than my 3.0, so it must be down to each individual car (or driver!)
I thought the gearing was better in the 2.5 especially between 40-70mph, I just dropped it and it took off.
(It did have 125k on the clock, so perhaps it was just run in better !)

I drove the Si version. It just felt very weak on the pick up. 06 m sport car. Even it sport mode it didn't make me think wow

I found the 2.5 i was pokey enough if worked through the whole of the rev range , these aren't turbo or supercharged units so they won;t ever feel like them under throttle

The 2.5si is definitely no slouch. I had one and remember raify for one commenting on how I didn't hang about.

Ive driven a 2,5 and found to be perfectly adequate and enjoyed driving it
For sensible everday road use i'm sure a 2,5 would be good choice

I have test both, and i can say that 3.0i do have much more torque in low.. But 2.5 is okay too, just make sure that vanos and other things works 100% so you dont lose any of small torque available.
I wish i bought 3.0i , but my car price and condition was top compared to other examples which were for sale.

My 2.5 and a Cooper S have broadly similar engine and performance stat's but feel worlds apart. The straight six gives a linear torque delivery that always amazes me as it seems to go on and on when you hold a gear, the Cooper S serves it in a shorter sharper punch then demands a change-up, I'd say both are pretty quick when you drive accordingly.

The 2.5 six is a slick tournament boxer, the Cooper S a gruff cage fighter both are very entertaining but not worth trying to compare 8)

There isn't really a pronounced powerband, no. I guess this is why you aren't feeling the "kick" that you're used to.

I think with the 2.5si, the best thing about it is that you can really rag the pants off it within the legal limit.

pre facelift 3.0i (m54b30): 300Nm torque
facelift 2.5si (n52b25): 250Nm torque

So there is a difference in the mid band pulling power (20% difference). The slight difference in final drive won't make up for that. (that also shows in the 0-62 time: 5,9 vs. 6,5 sec).

But if there's a huge difference, there might be something wrong with the engine.
It can also be a trick of your memory. You should really compare them side by side.

Wasnt it def a si OP?

I test drove a 2.5i (which was advertised as an si) before getting my 3.0 and imo i would agree... Wasnt as quick as i would have expected... And hardly any pin you in your seat feeling torque.

Don't forget. There are 2 facelift 2.5s. The lower output replaced the 2.2 in earlier models. It has 170bhp.

The higher output model is definitely no slouch, with little real world difference between it and the old 3.0i M54 engined zed

And 3.0i can be slow and powerless if vanos seals are worn, or there is some other problem such as vacuum leak or bad oxygen sensors.

There isn't even much difference between the 3.0si and the 2.5si; even back-to-back. Probably less than a passenger and a full tank of fuel in it.

Did the Sport button do anything? That's the other thing that could have been up - unlikely it was broken but perhaps the throttle map needed resetting.

At the end of the day though, you are looking at a car that's only about as fast as a current "warm hatch".

Yes, def a problem with it if it feels as described, my 2.5 Si Sport flies when it wants. The 2.5Si engine is a little pearl, I love it

That comparison is between the 2.5i and the 3.0 litre. The 2.5i has 185bhp (192PS) compared to the 2.5 Si which has 218 hp. The 2.5 Si also has a 6 speed gearbox

try this then:

You can compare any 2 cars

I've seen quite a few different performance specs but the majority say the 2.5si manual does 0-60 in 6.5 secs and 149mph top speed. so in the real world not much different to the 3.0si! :fuelfire: :P
